Steve Mandich Obituary

Steve R. Mandich

Steve Mandich died of a sudden heart attack at his home in Columbia City on Thursday, April 17, 2014. He was 44.

Steve Mandich was a lifelong Seattle-area resident. He grew up in Kent, WA, and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in journalism. An avid student of quirky corners of American pop culture, Mandich wrote the definitive biography of motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel (Evel Incarnate, Macmillan, 2000) and was working on a book about the entwined history of beer and baseball. He blogged extensively on topics ranging from Seattle sports history to 70s rock to Bigfoot lore and had recently achieved a goal of watching a game in every major-league baseball stadium.

Steve Mandich is survived by his mother, Margarite Jennings; his father, Robert Mandich; two sisters, Cheryl Jennings and Linda Joanou; his wife, Eliza Truitt; and twin 1-year-old daughters Beatrice and Vivian.

A memorial service will be held at the Mt. Baker Community Club at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 24.

I am sorry and shocked to hear that Steve has passed away. We were friends in the late 90s via our zines and I visited him in Seattle a few times from Australia. My deepest sympathies to his wife and daughters and to Margarite and Robert and his sisters.

I was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Steve Mandich on April 17, 2014, just one day after his last post on his Super Ichiro site April 16. I want to express my deepest condolences to Steve's wife and family and friends for their loss. As a huge Ichiro fan, I looked forward to reading Steve's updates after every game Ichiro played. I was born and grew up in Japan and love baseball in Japan and the USA, and I have followed Ichiro's career since he joined the Mariners. I appreciate and share Steve's admiration of Ichiro and I'm thankful that Steve spent time bringing joy to so many Ichiro fans with this site. Steve will be dearly missed.

I did not know Steve personally, but was a frequent visitor of his superichirocrazy blog. Steve shared his passion and fandom of the Mariners and Ichiro with his daily updates and humorous writing. Thank you Steve.

We never met but I was Steve's editor for EVEL INCARNATE and later his agent. I loved Steve's wide-ranging intellect and his brilliant writing and creativity. His fanzine, Heinous, was brilliant and I'm sure all who are lucky enough to have a copies treasure them.

My greatest condolences to his wife and family.
