Susan Haffie Obituary

Susan Marie (Martin) Haffie

Our family grieves the loss of Susan who passed to her heavenly realm with the Lord on March 14, 2015.

Sue was an auspicious, loving, energetic, kind, and elegant woman who was born and raised in Seattle and attended Forest Ridge High School where she graduated as Valedictorian. She attended Stanford University where she graduated in 1962. She cared greatly about children and spent her working years in child protective services and in child welfare services in the State of Washington. Upon retirement, she spent many years as a volunteer for the Snohomish County Seniors Guardianship Monitoring Program.

Sue's interests included travel, golf, running, gambling, dancing, intellectual games, raising her children, enjoying her grandchildren, spending winters in Hawaii, and experiencing life with her husband.

Among notable events in her life, Sue caught a 170 pound marlin, snorkeled on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, ran a ten mile race over a mountain in Hawaii, visited the seat of her religious faith in Jerusalem and the River Jordon, traveled throughout her granddaughters' cultural home of India for a month, taught two of her young granddaughters to do Suduco and crossword puzzles, saw Egypt's pyramids and sailed on the River Nile, and traveled throughout Europe.

Sue was a kind, caring, and giving wife, mother and grandmother. She was incredibly proud of her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her husband David, her sons Dr. David (Dr. Veena) Haffie, Douglas J.D. (Geraldine) Haffie, and her daughter Angela (Dr. David) Ison; granddaughters Julia, Mia, and Olivia; and grandsons Daniel and Oliver; her brother James Martin and her sister Sally Gray.

A funeral mass for Susan will be held at St. Cecelia Church in Stanwood, Washington on Saturday, April 11 at 11:00 a.m. A memorial Irish wake will be held on Saturday, May 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the 125th St. Grill in North Seattle.

Sue! I am so sad. So many times over the years Sue passed through my mind, and as with so many connections, I didn't pursue it. She was so consistently pleasant that it never occurred to me there wouldn't be forever. So I am so sorry she is gone, sorry I didn't get to catch up and hear about her grandchildren, who were not here last time I saw Sue. I would have loved being able to say goodbye, and to tell Sue how much I enjoyed working for her. Ah, so it goes. I have many delightful little memories of things she said! I don't know what happened in the end, but I hope she went peacefully. All my best to Sue's family.

We miss your infectious laugh, your kindness and your encouragement on the golf course. You are missed by all at the Saturday BBQ . May the angels wrap their wings around you and welcome you into their home. If you have time smile down on your golf buddies here in Hawaii, we need all the help we can get.

So very sad to learn of Sue's death. Such a lovely, smart, caring and happy friend for so many years. Although we did not see much of each other through the years, when we did get together it was as if it was just yesterday that we had spoken. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you for the loss of your wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
God Bless.

Sue was a very special friend. Her laugh, her stories of grandkids and her own children, times in meetings together during her professional career, I will miss all of those times. She left life-time memories never to be forgotten. Gwen

I can't believe that Sue has died. She was all the wonderful things you said about her, smart, caring, classy, with a great heart and a great sense of humor. Have been thinking about her lately and all she did for me as a friend and mentor. My heartfelt condolences to her husband and family. it will be so hard to live without her. The only thing I have learned about grief is that it hurts like hell and time really is the only thing that helps, years of tears. Judith Wirth
