One of my happiest and certainly most vivid memories growing up was planned by my brother Tim. On my 15th birthday, Tim was home from college on spring break. He woke me up that morning at 5:30 and announced that he was taking me to the Chicago Cubs opening day game at Wrigley Field. I was a rabid Cubs fan so this was the BEST surprise - skipping school of course added to the excitement. My memories that day include wearing sleeping bags to stay warm in a frigid ball park, a 10th inning win by the Cubs over the Montreal Expos, and most importantly, a great time spent with my brother who cared enough about his kid sister to plan this special day. Tim left us far too early - I wasn't done with him yet - and like my brother Jeff wrote below, I will always miss him.

Tim, my little brother, Sunday was the saddest day of my life. As little kids you always wanted to be a part of your older brothers' day. But you were, as all little brothers, just in the way. Then you matured and became the family's Cross Country star. Being the West Suburban Conf.'s first frosh champion was such a delight for me. I was in awe of your academic life. A PHD in the family. Wow, my little brother was becoming a great man and a loyal man. That is what I will always remember about you. Loyalty is a word that is not used enough nowadays. But, your loyalty to your parents, siblings, wife and children was quite evident to me. How lucky Emily, Alex and Rebecca are to have had a father who was genuinely interested in their activities. I will always miss you.

Describing Tim as a renaissance man (which of course he was) doesn’t do him justice by just listing a bunch of nouns. You’ve got to get into some specifics that illustrate the incredibly broad range of his interests and accomplishments. Case in point, the last time we were together, Tim’s response to my banal question of “So what are you up to these days?” ranged from a carbon sequestration project that he was working on (I think the largest project of its kind in the world), to Tibetan chanting music (which he was then studying and incorporating into his singing and guitar playing), together with a whole bunch of other seriously cool things in between. No hype or one-upmanship, just Tim telling you simply what he was up to. But what always impressed me most, and what characterized Tim best, was his love of family. I was always struck by how much Tim, Susan, Emily, Alex and Becky managed to spend time together- whether it was enjoying the great outdoors, playing music, or just hanging out. And while his time was tragically cut short, Tim packed into 57 years what will take us mere mortals a couple of lifetimes to achieve. We all are truly blessed by the time and love we shared with Tim. Vaya con Dios, old friend.
