Wallace Goleeke Obituary

Wallace J. GOLEEKE Wallace John Goleeke, "Wally", passed away 9/8/2011 in Spokane, WA after a brief, sudden illness. His adoring wife of 56 years, Suzanne, sons David of Redmond, WA and Richard, of Spokane, WA were by his side playing the music he so loved. Wally is also survived by Richard's wife Cindy, grandchildren Michael, Casey and Lindsey, brother Tom and several nieces and nephews. Wally was a lifelong Christian and lived that faith as he directed church choirs in Seattle, then Spokane throughout his lifetime. Wally and Sue retired to Spokane in 2003 to be near Richard (Rick) and his family. He directed at Northwood Presbyterian in Spokane for 8 years up to this last summer. Wallace was born to William and Ellen Goleeke in Ponca City, OK on 12/21/1932, joining older brother Bill and preceding younger brother Tommy. The family moved to Seattle in 1936 where Wally went to Allen Elementary, then Monroe Jr. High before graduating from Ballard High School in 1951. He went on to earn his BA, MA and DMA degrees at the University of Washington with post-doctoral studies in Vienna, Austria. After college and before joining the Navy, Wally married his dear Suzanne (Burton). Their first son David was born while he was still studying at the "U" and on active duty with the Naval Reserve. Second son Richard joined the family in 1961. When Ingraham High School opened in 1959, Wallace was chosen as the first Director of Choral Music, establishing a variety of choral groups. In 1963 when the chorale from Seattle's sister city Kobe, Japan made an historic West Coast tour, Ingra ham HS was chosen to host the group during their stay. Wally formed the 52 voice "Ingraham HS Touring Choir" that same year, to make a return visit to Kobe. The choir sang 27 concerts in 13 cities on a one month tour of Japan in the summer of 1964. This pioneering effort was praised by the People to People Program and the U.S. State Department. In 1966 Wally was chosen to devel op the Music Dept. at the newly opened Seattle Community College. He was there for 22 years teaching music theory, piano, history, and voice as well as di recting the choral groups there. In his career of over 50 years di recting, Wally led the Seattle Chorale, Seattle Gilbert and Sulli van Society, The SVEA (Swedish Male Chorus) and founded the Collegian Choir and the Seattle Bach choir which still performs. Wally's many interests included boating, flying, antique car restoration, and traveling. He enjoyed many fundraising activi ties as a member of the Ballard High School Foundation. A Celebration of Wally's life will be held at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, 7500 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, Saturday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m. Inurnment will take place at Butterworth Mortuary. If it hadn't been for Mr. Goleeke, as he was in the early 60's my high school experience would be sorely lacking in soul. We had such a good time in choir. I'll never forget and always be grateful

Something was deleted in sending my earlier message "I owe a great deal to not only what I learned..." Missing was the"how" of Wally as a teacher. Choral methods, vocal technique, shortcuts that made sense of music theory... the love of music ...shared from the heart. His kindness and patience (considering his incredibly fussy ear) with less than stellar singing talent in some choirs prevailed, and managed stunning performances that showed us at our best. His mentoring led me to a fulfilling career as a choral conductor/music educator and organist; no question was ever too trivial; he always had time to chat. He has surely joined the angels in that perfectly tuned heavenly choir!

I'm another who met Wally through antique boating. I enjoyed his gentle, modest humor and quiet enthusiasm for his family and life. We quickly discovered another common thread though, choral music; - I was a singer and had worked with several people he knew when I was a student. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing, and our prayers go out to his family. We are sad that he has passed, but celebrate a life well-lived!

Dr. Goleeke encouraged me to become a voice major at North Seattle Community College back in 1971 and I went on to the University of Washington to major in voice because of him. One of my fondest memories of Dr. Goleeke, was the time he broke into a ragtime ditty during our choir rehearsal - and here we thought he was so serious! He was great. I also enjoyed visiting him in his office, where he would smoke his beloved pipe in his cardigan sweater - that was when smoking everywhere was OK. Although the reason for this note is a sad one, remembering Dr. Goleeke has certainly brought up some delightful memories from my college days. Rest in peace, Dr. Goleeke.

Dr. Goleeke was my first voice teacher, taking me on as a junior at Ingraham High School in 1969. I continued studying with him as a voice major at No.
Seattle C.C. He was a fine coach and
an inspiration as he helped develop my
vocal skills during this time. With his guidance I went on to study at the UW and
continued with a semi professional career
for many years. I remember fondly his
great work ethic, along with his wry sense of humor. Thanks to Dr. Goleeke
for many wonderful memories

I first met Wally in the Naval Air Reserve at Sand Point back in the 1950's and we became good friends. I saw him a few years later at the Swedish Club and also at a music program that he was conducting at the U.W. He was a real gentleman and nice guy. Always plesant with a great smile on his face. He could kid with the best of us.
I followed him in his footsteps to Ingraham H.S. however I was a Health/P.E. teacher/coach.
I will miss seeing him from time to time.
My heart goes out to all of his family.
We were fortunate to know you Wally and I love you for being my friend.

I remember Wally mostly from the early days at Seattle Community College and the North Seattle Community College Chorale. I was amazed by his talent

Wally was highly respected by those who knew him. His contribution, and that of his family, to Ballard High School was-- and continues to be-- important and greatly appreciated.

I knew Wally through the antique boat club. Wally also volunteered to tune a piano for a wish child who was receiving a wish through the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Seattle. Wally was a great guy and I'm so sorry to hear of his passing.

I accompanied for Wally at the Seattle Swedish Male Chorus (SVEA) for a year or two. Enjoyed immensely his dry sense of humor, but especially his devotion to the art of choral music. SVEA lost a great conductor when he moved to Spokane, and now we all have lost a great friend.

Dr. Goleeke touched my life with his gift of music in 1979. I still have my first piano book and I remember how caring and gentle he was in teaching at my level. He was a good teacher as he was led by his heart from God. As I knew that he had perfect pitch.....I now know that he is completely perfect, now and forever. I know that One Day Jesus is going to sing a song before all of us and it just would not surprise me in seeing Doctor G. directing Doctor J. in His song.

Thank you for your musical/choral instruction including the musical scale drills on the blackboard everyday and teaching us to sing both the Treble & Bass Clefs. This helped me to bail out my church choir when they were short Tenors. The Director asked me to sing Tenor on part of a song and jump back to the Treble Clef. Thanks again, Dr. Goleeke!! I will miss your smile and the opportunities for conversation. Now, you will be directing God's Heavenly choir. Prayers to your family.
Sincerely, Meridee Johansen--Cadet Choir Student-Ingraham High School Graduating Class of 1967.

Such a nice man and so talented. Now I know why all us girls were in love with Mr Goleeke. He was only a decade older than we were when I went to Ingraham and sang in the choir and girl's ensemble. Suzanne I want you to know your beloved husband never encouraged our puppy love. We admired him so much it just came natural. I'm thanking God for his influence in my young life.
