Dr. William Garrick Friend -

medical pioneer, gardening enthusiast, and husband of the late Linda Botty Friend of Mercer Island - died peacefully on April 7, 2018, at the age of 82. Born September 6, 1935, in Seattle, he was the son of the late Dr. Austin Gerald and Evelyn Garrick Friend.

Dr. Friend graduated from The Lakeside School, Princeton University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he was awarded the Undergraduate Research Award in Medicine for his part in the development of the world's first synchronous cardiac pacemaker in 1962.

Following six years of surgical residency training in New York City, Dr. Friend returned to Seattle in October of 1971 where he became the first board certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon in Washington State. As an Attending Surgeon at Swedish Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Dr. Friend pioneered the fields of colonoscopy in 1969, outpatient surgery in 1976 followed by laser surgery.

In 1979 he patented certain occult blood technologies that have since been used by an estimated 700 million people worldwide in screening for colon and rectal cancer.

Dr. Friend authored dozens of medical articles, gave hundreds of local and national medical lectures, conducted numerous Clinical Trials for the FDA as Principal Investigator, was President of a Venture Capital firm in Seattle and was the recipient of a variety of awards. Prior to medical school Dr. Friend, an Expert Rifleman, spent two years in the US Army stationed at the Headquarters of the 52nd AAA Brigade which controlled the Nike Guided Missile Air Defense for New York City.

He loved gardening and landscaping, as well as boating on Lake Washington.

He is survived by daughters Leslie Friend Ilany and Debbie Friend; grandchildren Samuel, Sarah, Nathan, Benjamin and Caroline; and sister Carol Harper.

Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, April 28 at 10:00 am, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:30 am at the Seattle Tennis Club, 922 McGilvra Boulevard East, Seattle, WA 98112.

Remembrances are suggested to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the ASPCA or your favorite charity.

Dr Friend operated on me 35 years ago when I was just out of high school and saved me from a horribly painful condition, and I am forever grateful. He was a wonderful man indeed.
