Shirley Silberstein Obituary

Mrs. Shirley Silberstein, 86, of Sedalia, died May 14, 2009 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland.

She was born Shirley Boraz in St. Louis, MO on April 21, 1923.  She married Harold Silberstein on May 16, 1945.  Shirley and Harold made Sedalia their home in 1946.

Shirley was an active member of the Sedalia community. While her daughters were in school she was a Room Mother and a Girl Scout Leader.  For many years, she volunteered with the Bothwell Hospital Auxilliary and the Literacy Council of Sedalia.  She also volunteered her time to the Sedalia Symphony, Pettis County Historical Society, the Liberty Center, and CASA.  Shirley was a member of Sorosis and the Helen Steele Music Club. She was an active member of Temple Beth El and served as the Temple's last President.  Shirley was the last remaining member of Temple Beth El and Sedalia's once thriving Jewish Community.
Shirley loved playing Mahjong, gardening, reading, and watching movies.  She enjoyed teaching Mahjong to anyone who wanted to learn.

Shirley is survived by her daughters Deborah Stoeckle of Annapolis, MD, and Nancy Fink of Miami, FL, her sons-in-law Karl Stoeckle and Morris Fink, her grandchildren Adam and Leslie Stoeckle, and Sam Fink.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 A.M. on Monday May 25th at the McLaughlin Funeral Chapel. Services for Shirley will be held there at 11:30 AM, with Rabbi Lane Steinger officiating and a graveside service will follow at Hebrew Union Cemetery.

Following the graveside service, the family will be receiving visitors at Shirley's home, 507 S. State Fair Blvd.

The family suggests donations in Shirley's honor be made to The Children's Therapy Center or the American Diabetes Association, in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.

Harold Silberstein and I were roommates in Maryville College
in 1939 & 1940. I met Shirley in Sedalia. She was pleased
that my father gave a donation to a worthy cause.
The relatives should be proud of Shirley and I hope that
all of them will have a wonderful life.
