Lena Mae HorseChief was born May 25,1968, at Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah
to Betty (Drum) and Herman Acker. She was a Cherokee citizen born to the Bird Clan.
Lena attended school at Braggs High School and graduated as valedictorian of her
class. She received an Associates Degree from Bacone College where she was a cheerleader. At Northeastern State University she graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education and met her husband David C. HorseChief.
David and Lena were married August 9, 1990, at Dwight Mission. They made their
home at Tahlequah and had two sons, Corrigan and Garrett and two daughters,
Sydnee (who died as an infant) and Samantha.
Lena loved talking to and learning about people. She was genuinely interested in
peoples lives and their children. She worked as an early childhood teacher at the
Muskogee. Early Childhood Center for 15 years, where she made many friends.
She enjoyed attending many community events, and was a member of the Stokes
Smith stomp grounds.
May 18, 2023, at the age of 55, our beloved Lena Mae began her return journey to
the Creator. Following a morning service at the Green Country Funeral Home at
Tahlequah led by Rev. Steve Campbell with pallbearers D'Mahree Turner, Trayelle
Davis, John Drum, Obediah O'Field, Danny Bell, Todd Downing and T. J. Downing, and honorary bearers Garrett and Noah HorseChief, she was laid to rest following a short service at the McCoy Cemetery north of Sallisaw.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Sue Wells; father, Herman Acker; daughter, Sydnee; sister, Mary Allen; and brother, Richard Acker.
She left behind her husband, David and children Corrigan, Garrett and Samantha.
Also sisters, Betty Jean Diana and Martha Patterson; and two nephews and three nieces,
D'Mahree Turner, Tyler Allen, Tiffany Dunn, Robbie Dunn and Bailey Allen.
Lena was a fierce advocate for the ones she loved, and leaves a legacy of love and
laughter to all who knew her.
