Born on Sept. 30, 1922, in Sallisaw, Lillian Lucille New lived a life that would put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. On Thursday, June 13, 2024, in Union City, Calif., she left the party when she was ready, not when the music stopped.
Diamond Lil had an open heart and a non-judgmental nature. She transformed her kitchen into a haven for the community, providing comfort and nourishment to those who needed it. The sweet aroma of her signature cinnamon rolls lingered through the streets, drawing in people of all ages who would eagerly gather for a taste of her culinary love.
As a trailblazing rivet inspector during World War II she was a force to be reckoned with. From her days as the owner of Diamond Lil's Truck Stop to her nights dancing at the Pink Poodle (she always had a full dance card), Lillian lived life on her own terms. She was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation and the Moose Lodge, with a passion for volunteering and a zest for life. This bingo enthusiast, and canning queen was the epitome of a strong, sassy woman.
A vocalist, guitarist, and yodeler, Lillian's love for music was only rivaled by her love for adventure. Lillian's insatiable curiosity led her down the road less traveled, and she never backed down from a challenge. She defied convention by farming and driving at a time when women were rarely seen behind the wheel - and she did it all with a lead foot and a fearless spirit. Her legacy is a rich tapestry of laughter, love, and sharp wit, inspiring generations to come.
Lillian's loving memories live on through her children: Clarence Thomas Powell, Lonnie Cornelius Powell, Penny Eunice Gutierrez, Roger Wayne Powell and Regina Annette New. She is also survived by a vibrant family that includes 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren. Lillian was preceded in death by her beloved son Ronney Houston Powell, her devoted husband of 22 years, J.B. New and her seven siblings.
Rest in peace, Lillian Lucille New. Your 101 trips around the sun were a wild ride, and we're all better for having known you.

Services will be held graveside for friends and family at Turlock Memorial Park, 575 N Soderquist Rd, Turlock, CA 95380 at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024.
