Ada Wong Obituary

WONG, Ada Chan - Of Oakland, CA, passed away peacefully with her daughter and son by her side, Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at the age of 91. A native of Oakland, Ada was born April 17, 1914. The second eldest of eight children born to Bock Hing Chan and Ying Wong Chan, she was a graduate of UC Berkeley and an active member of Sigma Omicron Pi sorority and alumni chapter. She was the widow of Bay Area architect Worley K. Wong. In addition to family, she loved art, architecture, traveling, flowers, mahjong, retreats to Rio Nido, vanilla ice cream and chocolate. For many years she served on the Women's Board of the Oakland Museum where she was a member of one of the first docent classes. She participated in fundraising activities for the museum, including the White Elephant Sale, and volunteered at the Collector's Gallery. Ada had also been a member of the Oakland Symphony Guild and the Women's Architectural League, and had been a volunteer at Kaiser Permanente hospital in Oakland. She was a member of the Alameda County Apartment House Association Auxiliary and was a faithful parishioner at the Chinese Community United Methodist Church in Oakland. Ada was a devoted, loving, and generous daughter, sister, wife, daughter-in-law, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. Already deeply missed by her family and friends, she is survived by brother Alvin Chan of San Francisco; sisters, Dr. Janet Lee and Bertha Tong of Oakland; Madelene Wong of Portola Valley; and Eleanor McGill of Kauai; daughter, Kitty Wong Okamura and son-in-law, Arthur Okamura of Bolinas; son, Robin Wong and daughter-in-law, Barbara Wong of Piedmont; granddaughter, Stephanie Tom Coupe and grandson-in-law, David Coupe of Fair Oaks; grandsons, Darren Wong of Oakland and Corey Wong of Piedmont; great-grandson, William Worley Coupe and great-granddaughter, Lindsay Chan Coupe of Fair Oaks; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother, Norman Chan of Oakland; and sister, May Taam of San Francisco. The Memorial Service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland.
