I met Rev. Hata long after his retirement when he moved to San Diego to be closer to his daughter Tissa and his grandchildren. He joined the Buddhist Temple of San Diego at that time and served as an associate minister, assisting us when the resident minister had a conflict, or during the period we were between resident ministers and our Sangha needed a minister's services. I always enjoyed my conversations with Hata Sensei because he had a long and interesting life history and was very matter of fact about its hardships and ups and downs. He also could find humor in the ongoing challenges of getting older, too.
Regrettably my husband and I will not be able to attend his memorial service, but we will gratefully offer incense in his memory on that day.
Sincerest condolences to his family in gassho...
