Alexander Shulgin Obituary

Alexander Theodore Shulgin

June 17, 1925 - June 2, 2014

Alexander "Sasha" Theodore Shulgin was born in Berkeley, California to Theodore and Henrietta Shulgin. A multi-instrumentalist, with a lifelong love of music, Sasha attended Harvard, but left to join the Navy during WWII. He later earned a biochemistry PhD from UC Berkeley. Sasha married Nina Gordon in 1948. In 1949 their son Ted was born. Both predeceased Sasha: Nina in 1977, Ted in 2011.

Working for Dow Chemical, Sasha developed the first biodegradable pesticide. In 1960 after taking mescaline, he began to research psychedelics, inventing hundreds of them and becoming known as the "Godfather of Ecstasy" after publishing a description of MDMA's effects. Loved by many for his intelligence, creativity, and wit, Sasha was a prolific author, teacher, and worldwide lecturer. He married Ann Perry in 1981; they lived happily together until his death from cancer. He is survived by his widow, Ann, her children, Alice, Brian, Christopher, and Wendy, and 8 grandchildren. I wish i had a chance to shake your hand, and thank you. Me, like many others benefited from your extensive research and information you so openly passed to those looking to expand themselves. May you enjoy your "trip"...to the other side.
