Alexis Benioff passed away peacefully at home on Sept. 22, 2016 at age 91. A San Francisco native, son of Fred and Helen Benioff, he shared 69 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved Marilyn. During World War II, at age 18, Al enlisted in the infantry, serving as a member of the Blackhawk Division in Europe and the Philippines; he later graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor's degree in Business and a minor in Electrical Engineering. After a career in retail, including working in the family business, Benioff's, Al specialized in accounting; he welcomed the computerization of the field, which allowed him to use his engineering gifts until his retirement at 84. Al was forward-thinking, ever-curious, and deeply committed to making the world a better place. He loved sailing in the Bay, traveling the world; discussing new ideas, enjoying a good bottle of wine and lending support to his many friends and family, to whom he was devoted. Al is survived by his wife Marilyn; his children Louis (Rachel), Carol and Jeanne (John Richardson); his grandsons Eli and Isaac Benioff. Brother of the late Russell Benioff, father-in-law of the late Heinz Rolinek. The family is deeply grateful to Al's caregiver Epeneri Naituku, Dr. Charles Morris, and the staff of Sutter Care at Home Hospice. To honor Al's memory, gifts can be made to UCSF Memory and Aging Center, where Al was one of the oldest research participants. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 9 at 3:00 PM at Sinai Memorial Chapel. A Celebration of Al's Life will follow on November 20.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
