Alfred Baxter Obituary

Alfred Coleman Baxter April 17, 1928 - October 25, 2007 Al was born in Oakland to Dr. Geoffrey Baxter and Mrs. Ruth Coleman Baxter. He grew up in Kensington, attending Kensington School and El Cerrito (Junior/ Senior) High School (class of 1946) before heading to U.C. Berkeley. Both as a student and alumnus, Al was a loyal fan of the California Golden Bears football team. He joined the army in 1951, served in Korea for one year, and was honorably discharged in 1954. He worked in the family business, Sunset View Cemetery, and later for Contra Costa County. In 1957, Al met and married Nancy Burks with whom he had two daughters. Cindy Baxter Watchmaker and her husband Christopher have two sons, Robert (13) and Michael (9); Hilary has two daughters, Elise (15) and Anne (12), from her former marriage. His four grandchildren were the light of Al's life in his later years. Al was very patriotic and loved the military. In retirement, he joined both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of the Bay Cities Masonic Lodge No. 337 F&AM. A Memorial Service will be held on the Veterans Day holiday, Monday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset View Cemetery and Mortuary, top of Fairmount Ave, El Cerrito, followed by a reception at the Claremont Hotel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Avenue, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523. SUNSET VIEW MORTUARY 510-525-5111
