Alice Ravano Obituary

Alice Kathleen Marshall Ravano
08/19/1929 - 07/11/2024
Alice Ravano died peacefully at home on July 11th, 2024, at age 94, surrounded by loved ones. A native San Franciscan, born on August 19, 1929 to Caroline Brady and George Marshall. Alice was raised in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood, the cherished 5th child with siblings Peggy, George, Carol and Bill, all of whom preceded her in death. She and her siblings were exceptionally close and had many good parties throughout the decades.
She attended St. Agnes Grammar School, Academy of the Presentation class of 1947 (where she cut class during her senior year to see Frank Sinatra in concert), and UC Berkeley Class of 1951 (the Bears made it to the Rose Bowl 3 times during her 4 years at Cal).
After graduating from Cal, Alice taught school at Grattan Elementary in the Haight, and later in life she spent many years as a substitute teacher. She enjoyed running into former students out and about in San Francisco.
Alice met the love of her life, Louis Ravano, at the Monican Club, and they were married at St. Agnes Church on December 26, 1953. Louis preceded Alice in death, but not before they had 65 wonderful years together where they were known for being the last ones on the dance floor. They visited family in Europe, traveled across the United States, and took countless trips to Hopland, Tahoe to ski, and cruises with friends and family.
Mom was an active member of St. Philip the Apostle Church in Noe Valley where she served as PTA President, was on the Parish Council, and made many lifelong friends.
Alice is survived by her children Louie (Maryanne), Kathy (Mary), Carol (Randy) and Linda; grandsons Tony (Morgan), Danny (Cami), Davey, Nick (Karen), Alex, Sebastian, and Laurence; and great-grandsons Vincent, Thomas, Sam, Leo and Charlie. She was also the cherished aunt of many nieces and nephews in the Hoenisch, Brown, Marshall and Moore families.
The family would like to thank Mom's dedicated caregivers, especially Sala who was with her for the last 5 months of her life.
Alice was a loving Wife, Mom, Mema, Auntie Alice, and friend to many. She touched countless lives during her 94 years, 11 months and 10 days she was on this earth, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be at the Duggan Welch Funeral Home, 3434-17th St, SF on Wed., July 17 at 6pm with Vigil Service at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Thur., July 18 at 10am at St. Philip Church, 725 Diamond St, SF. Donations in her honor may be made to Sisters of Presentation, 2340 Turk Blvd, SF 94118 or St. Philip School, 665 Elizabeth St, SF 94116.

Alice's mother, Carrie, and my mom, Hazel were first cousins. We moved into our house on ClaytonSt. in 1947, the year Alice went off to Berkeley and I followed in her footsteps at St. Agnes, Presentation and eventually Berkeley., although we were never at those schools at the same time. I have many fond memories of the time I spent at that beautiful Victorian house and was inspired to want a big family like theirs because of the time I enjoyed sitting around the table with such a loving close family. Although as the years went by my family moved away from San Francisco, the Marshall family has always been an important part of my own life story. So thank you to all of Alice's family. And bon voyage to Alice. I'm sure you will all have many wonderful stories to share with one another even as you mourn your loss. Sending you all my love and appreciation,

Your cousin,
Judy (Zollinger) Andrich

Dear Louie, Kathy, Carol and Linda- I just read of your mother´s passing as my brother , Brian, and I were talking about "life on Turquoise Way!" I looked her up and sadly saw the obituary. Brian and I are so sorry to read the news of your mother´s passing but will keep in our hearts the many fond memories (and celebrations) our families shared as great next door neighbors for years: Conversations out the windows between the houses, Italian and Irish parties, and getting into some trouble here and there! Both your parents were so much fun and will be greatly missed. Our condolences to your entire family.

Alice was such a warm and welcoming person. She always had a smile and willingness to share. We enjoyed many memories of July 4th celebrations at Clear Lake and loved being part of The Tradition. She touched our lives in many ways. Go Bears. God bless her.

Sending my condolences to all of Alice's family. I know one of her daughters (Kathy), but from knowing Kathy, I know that Alice was a wonderful Mother and Lou a wonderful Father. Alice will be missed by her family and many friends, but she has left a lifetime of memories that will continue to provide comfort.

My condolences for the passing of this great soul. Alice and Lou attended many of our Nossardi family gatherings, and always added excitement with their presence. Even then, from my youthful perspective, I saw the energy and impact Alice had on her circle. What a wonderful legacy.

Mrs. Ravano and her husband Lou were what made growning up in the Noe Valley and attending St. Phillips school so wonderful. I remember them both at various parish events and at the parites my parents would host at the Mullan house. God bless you and thanks for making our life worderful.

Alice was not only a friend but someone who helped us new mothers feel welcome at St. Philip's so many years ago. I always enjoyed talking with her and Lou at various St. Philip's functions through the years. She was one of a kind.
