Allen Arieff Obituary

Allen Arieff
September 30, 1938 - November 4, 2022
Allen Arieff, M.D., passed away in his sleep in San Francisco, California, on November 4, 2022 after a long battle with dementia.
He is survived by his daughters Allison Arieff and Adrienne Arieff and their spouses Bryan Burkhart and Alexander Berline; and his three granddaughters, Emilia, Emma, and India.
A lifetime Cubs fan, Arieff grew up in Chicago and was a graduate of the University of Illinois and Northwestern Medical School. He practiced medicine for over 50 years as a nephrologist and brain researcher working jointly at UCSF and the Veterans' Administration Hospital in San Francisco. He continued to see patients in private practice in Beverly Hills until the age of 77. He published 500 academic research papers and trained hundreds of medical students over the course of his long career.
In his free time, you'd find him at the San Francisco Opera, traveling to exotic locales, riding his bike up Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, or welding sculptures from scrap metal at the San Francisco Art Institute. But perhaps his greatest simple pleasure was sharing cappuccino and a pastry with his daughters who are devastated by the loss of their beloved father.

I miss him a lot. He helped me grow up into a good person, and I think he'd agree I helped him do the same. But now I have no one to talk to about opera and especially his beloved Wagner.

I was a patient of Dr. Arieff for about 15 years. We became very good friends. He and his wife attended my wedding in 2004. That same year I received a kidney with his help. We both had a love for Opera. He would go on on and on about the Ring cycle . In fact we met at the opera in SF and in LA a few times. We laughed often. I will really miss him. We may have lost contact as he stepped away from medicine but I am a better person for knowing him in so many ways. He was one of the smartest loving guys I have ever known. He spoke often about his daughters. I heard all about Dwell magazine at the time. I still have my kidney and am very healthy thanks to the help and support of Dr. Arieff . So sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences go out to Allison and Adrienne and the whole family.

I worked for Allen in his nephrology research lab at the SFVA in the late 70's. I had been working for him for less than a month when he told me I should go to medical school. I owe my career to his faith in me and his mentorship. I also owe him my addiction to really good strong coffee. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. To his family, please accept my sincerest condolences.
