Allen Schuh Obituary

Allen Anthony Schuh

Allen loved Christmas, so as a final gift he got to see his beloved lights and ornaments one last time before passing quietly away on December 28. Born July 9, 1940 on Chicago's South Side, Allen was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School, Holy Cross College and Harvard Law School. Allen served in the Judge Advocate General's office of the US Army for two years, then practiced real estate law at Holleb and Coff in Chicago. Allen moved to San Francisco in 1988 to care for his (predeceased) partner Paul A. Anderson. A great chef and wonderful host, Allen's house there was always open to friends and family and filled with laughter, love and food. A proud member of AA for over 40 years, sponsor of the Frameline Film Festival, Academy of Friends, and Lambda Legal, Allen moved back to Chicago in 2017 and continued his love for mystery stories, the White Sox, and family. Even in the face of his final illness, you could always count on Allen's caring heart, incredible generosity and compassion for others. Allen will be so very missed by his spouse Jonathan Swain, brothers Jack and wife Donna (Meilinger), Randy and wife Catherine (Inkel), David and wife Jan (Flaa). "Uncle A" will also be remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends from around the country. Be at peace, Allen. Although there will be an empty spot at the table and in our hearts, now it is time for you to be looked after, and know that your holiday lights are shining a little brighter now. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

We met on 7/20/1969 and watched the Moon Landing together. Allen's first trip to California was in July 1970 when we went on a TWA "Go Go Tour". For 52 years we were friends - Allen was my first gay friend. We had a hell of a time! See you later, Allen.

My favorite memory of "Uncle" Allen was when he took my friend and I to a nice restaurant in San Francisco and he ordered his favorite banana cream pie to share. Well I ended up eating a majority of the pie before he finally said, "I´m glad I got this pie to share but I haven´t had a bite." I felt so bad but he just laughed. I will miss his great sense of humor, and his very generous heart. God Bless you Uncle Allen.

"Morning Doctor," I'd say, as I met him in the entrance to the IHOP, and he'd laugh. Such a beautiful laugh. He loved to meet with me here because he could sneak and order bacon, and he knew I wouldn't tell anyone. He loved me very much, and over the course of several years, he shared incredibly generously with me his experience, strength and hope so that I might also live a more useful and more beautiful life than many people ever get to have. We taught each other a great deal. I cannot think of him without a gentle, warm smile taking over my face. I'll do my best to emulate his kindness, to be more like him when I grow up.

Allen was the most interesting person I have ever known. He was a truly generous, kind and engaging friend and he will be missed more than I can express. One in a million, for sure.
