Alma Carroll Obituary

Alma Carroll

Dec 11, 1926 - Aug 12, 2016

A remarkable life came to a peaceful end for Alma Carroll who passed away with her loving son at her side on August 12 after a tenacious and courageous battle with cancer. Alma will be sorely missed by all those who were blessed to know her especially for her great wit, humor and generosity. Always independent and strong in character, she willingly shared her time and talent with those who relied on her valuable and truthful advice. Alma's timeless style (especially her fabulous hats); her sophistication and elegance were second only to her kindness and thoughtfulness of others.

An award-winning writer-editor, Alma's career included twice serving as president of the Northern California Press Women, and achieved special recognition for being the first woman elected to an executive officer ship during the l970's. Her career included a lengthy tenure of a special assignment feature writer for the SF Chronicle; staff writer for the PBS station, KQED; editor of Focus Magazine and stringer for Broadcast Magazine.

Alma was recognized by the California Legislature in honor for her contributed invaluable leadership to the Northern California District of CA Press Women as well as to her community and state. She is part of the history of the SF Press Club, in that she was the first woman elected to office and was directly responsible for implementing nondiscriminatory use of the Club's facilities by women. She also was recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for her work in Northern California television and was a member of Broadcast Legends.

Alma was a native Californian; a graduate of University of Pacific with a degree in business and studied journalism at UC-Berkeley. She was a 'social butterfly' being very active in many social clubs (mostly an officer) to the very end of her life. She loved playing bridge and when asked how she spends her time, would reply, "I'm still refining the aristocratic art of doing as little as possible".
Survived by her son Frank Alimbini, her granddaughter Alison Krotter, great granddaughter Penelope Krotter. Alma is survived by her two sisters Mary Compton and Margaret Buckingham and her brother Ed Serpa and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Private Service will be held in Alma's honor by the Neptune Society.
