Amado Gonzalez Obituary

Amado Gonzalez September 13, 1913 - December 9, 2007 Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary and 14 siblings. Loving father of David (Gina), Diana (Michael) and Ramon (Deborah); adored grandfather of Kevin, Mark (Kimberly), Annette Garcia; great grandfather of Haley, Nicholas and Daniel Bryant, Jesse, Ricardo and Raquel Garcia; also survived by nieces, nephews and many friends. Amado Gonzalez lived in San Francisco since his arrival from Mexico in 1927, at the age of 13. He was an artist all of his life. He began his career as a commercial artist, winning many awards in this field. Most notable were his illustration ads that ran nationally for Bank of America and his posters for the Wine Institute. In 1969 he did 69 paintings for the Sunday supplement of the Examiner/Chronicle (then known as the "California Living Section"), which featured scenic depictions of Northern California and San Francisco. In 1972 he turned his talents to painting oil portraits. Eleven of these portraits, including five chancellors, hang in various areas of the UCSF Hospital complex. Besides company presidents and board executives, there are also individual portraits that hang in many private homes around the Bay Area. Amado also extended his talents to teaching and taught at SF City College for 28 years. He was a member of the Family Club, Bohemian Club, and one of the founders and past presidents of the SF Society of Illustrators. He touched the lives of all who knew him. He was deeply loved and will be missed. Friends and family are invited to attend a Vigil Service on Thursday, December 13, 7pm and the Funeral Mass on Friday, December 14, 10am, BOTH at St. Agnes Church, 1025 Masonic (near Page St.), SF. In lieu of flowers, contributions are preferred to the charity of your choice.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Amado once, last year when I interviewed him about his early days as an illustrator at Patterson & Sullivan.
I was deeply impressed. His artistic legacy left a lasting impression on the agency, and I greatly admired his long career, and body of work.
Respectly, Bruce Hettema—P&H Creative Group

My dear cousin Amado,

I thank God for the joy of living in his stunning beautiful world, where pain and joy coexist, life is sweet and my eyes have seen Amado's legacy that wll live on for future generations..He will be forever in my heart.

When I was little(5), Amado was 15..We (my brothers and sister) loved going over to the Gonzalez home on Army Street. Our Grandmothers were sisters, and we had so many cousins..

Amado had a very funny sense of humor, and he loved to tease me..Remember I was 5 and he was 15..Well,I would get angry and tell him,I was going to call the Devil and have him taken away!!!
Thank God for all of us the Devil didn't want him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amado was so sincere in his works and shared with all..This prayer says how Amado lived his life..
Lord, make me worthy of those who are watching me work, with the talents you have given me..

Forever in my heart,your cousin

My Tio Amado was one of my favorite and beloved uncles. His loving and amusing ways will forever be treasured. I can see him now as he paints a portrait of Heavens Gates.

A Friend

December 11, 2007

"Amado" is Spanish for "beloved." I first met Amado and Mary when they were my neighbors on Delmar Street in the 1970s. I renewed their acquaintance in the 1990s through my association with one of the clubs to which Amado belonged. He was beloved by all who knew him and radiated warmth and graciousness with even the simplest gesture. A gentleman always, kind and soft-spoken. A treasure. My sympathy to his son David and his wife, with whom I was also acquainted, and to all of his large family of relations and friends.

It was my honor and privilege to have known Amado for the past 25 years. Seldom without a smile and a warm greeting, a friend to all he met. He will live in my heart forever. I am sure he is now where he wanted to be, alongside his beloved Mary. Farewell, friend.
