Andrew Streitwieser Obituary

Andrew Streitwieser
June 23, 1927 - Feb 23, 2022
Andrew "Andy" Streitwieser, beloved father and Professor Emeritus of the College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley, passed away February 23rd, 2022 at the age of 94 after a short illness. Andy was an internationally renowned chemist, a pioneer in molecular orbital theory, and wrote several widely used organic chemistry textbooks. He authored over 200 professional papers and was given numerous awards, grants, and honors for his work during his long career, including induction to the National Academy of Sciences.

Born in Buffalo, NY in 1927 and raised in NYC, Andy discovered his love of chemistry as a teen and was able to do the work he loved his entire life. After completing undergraduate and graduate work at Columbia University, he joined the faculty at UC Berkeley where he remained for 70 years, even working with students until his last few years.

He had many interests outside of chemistry. Andy loved music, regularly attended the San Francisco Opera, and traveled around the globe for Wagner's Ring Cycle. As an avid nature photographer with a particular interest in solar eclipses, Andy was a longtime member of the Berkeley Camera Club. He went fly-fishing annually with his son David, and explored the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu with his daughter Susan. An unstoppable punster, Andy was a favorite tablemate at the Berkeley Breakfast Club. He loved art, football (especially the 49ers), books, a great meal, laughter, and spirited discussion. He especially enjoyed wine and was a longtime member of several East Bay wine tasting groups.

Andy is survived by his two children David and Susan (Anders), granddaughter Katie (McDonald), and two great-grandchildren. Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Andy's name to the Parkinson's Foundation <https://www.parkinson.org/>.

Andy was a great advisor and scientist, one of the worldwide pioneers in the field of physical organic chemistry. I had the opportunity to work with him as a postdoctoral fellow in his group around 30 years ago and really enjoyed everything. My warmest condolences to his family members and to the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at UC Berkeley.
