Ann Fontanella Obituary

Ann Marcella Fontanella
04/14/1954 - 11/26/2024
Inspiring and beloved City College of San Francisco professor Ann Fontanella unexpectedly rushed home early Tuesday morning to meet her mom and dad Marcella and Albert in heaven. For those of us running to catch up to Ann, she would ask that we all slow down and pause a moment to count our blessings as we remember Ann's beautiful life and momentous career.
Always true to her bilingual and bicultural roots, Ann was raised in San Francisco, California and Rome, Italy. A graduate of St. Gabriel's School on Vicente Street in San Francisco, the Marymount International High School in Rome, and San Francisco State University (B.A. Italian Language & Literature, Minor in Spanish; M.A. Comparative Literature, Classics; M.A. TEFL), Ann's love of learning is a gift that each of her students has the opportunity to share forever.
Early in her career, Ann taught at private language schools in the City and at universities in Japan and South Korea. Her rise at City College over the past twenty-six years from adjunct instructor to full-time, tenured professor includes selfless hours of service training other teachers, presenting at conferences, demonstrating for the educator's Union, leading Project S.H.I.N.E. volunteers, ensuring quality of the accreditation team, and writing heartfelt letters of recommendation for students who transferred to major universities such as Columbia, Harvard, U.C. Berkeley, S.F.S.U., U.S.F., and more. Many of Ann's students started in her non-credit E.S.L. classes and most of them have gone on to brilliant careers.
In March of 2014, Ann received the prestigious Teacher of the Year Award by the International Association T.E.S.O.L. and National Geographic Learning. Ann's teaching was recognized for her outstanding ability to instruct for Student Engagement and Community Leadership.
Outside of the classroom, Ann was a bon vivant who volunteered yearly for the San Francisco Intl Jazz Festival, the San Francisco Intl Film Festival, and even worked a side job for a few years on weekends as a Concierge at the San Francisco Embarcadero Hyatt Regency Hotel! Her wit, humor, and generous soul is like her favorite fleur reminding us to always Look UP – The Sunflower.
Ann is survived by her cousins in Italy, the Timmi, Renzi, and Forgia families of Rome, the Eternal City, and by her many friends, colleagues, and students here in San Francisco and around the world.
Memorial Mass will be held by Ann's family at St. Peter & Paul's Cathedral, North Beach, Saturday morning December 7th, 10:30 AM. The Visitation for Ann will be held Wednesday evening, December 4th, starting at 5pm at Green Street Mortuary, North Beach, San Francisco.

Dear Ann Fontanella,

You were more than just a teacher to me-you were an inspiration. Your passion, dedication, and patience made learning a joyful journey. You had the remarkable ability to bring out the best in me, even when I doubted myself.
Your guidance and encouragement will forever be a part of who I am, and the lessons you taught me, both in and out of the classroom, will remain cherished memories.
Thank you for being such a profound influence in my life. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

With heartfelt condolences.
Julia.

Let me know if you´d like any changes or personal touches added.

To Ann Marcella Fontanella

I did not lose you, dear mentor, so true-
You gave me the strength to grow into you.
With every step, your spirit remains,
A guiding light through joys and pains.

Let us keep lifting, with hearts full of grace,
Showing love´s power in every space.
You taught me to shine, to glow and inspire,
To carry warmth, igniting hearts afire.

Like sunshine pure, I spread what you gave,
A legacy bright, forever to save.
Through kindness and love, your essence will stay,
A pillar, a beacon, lighting the way.

I was sad to learn of Ann´s passing. We talked at our 50th St Gabriel´s reunion, what a nice surprise to see her there! Ann & I were friends in 7th & 8th grades, along with Gracie, Pam, Jeanette, Terri, Elaine, Colleen and Eileen - those were fun, carefree days when we were 12-13-14 years old. Ann was a lovely, sweet person.

My deepest condolences to Ann's family, friends, colleagues, and students. I met Ann in graduate school and remember her as a smart, funny, unfailingly supportive classmate who was always willing to offer helpful feedback on projects.

I was very happy to see Ann again at the SFSU MATESOL program's 2014 event celebrating its 50th anniversary, shortly after Ann had won the 2014 TESOL Teacher of the Year Award. She was her usual charming, charismatic self, giving an entertaining speech which reminded all of us of the outstanding education we had received in the MATESOL program and of her particular gifts as a teacher

Ann's lasting legacy is evident in the lives of her many highly accomplished former ESL students and fellow TESOL colleagues who have been impacted by her work. May her soul rest in peace.

Ann and I were classmates at Saint Gabriel School (Class of '68). After graduation, we didn't see each other until the evening of our 50-year class reunion. When her car pulled up outside the Lake Merced venue, I immediately recognized her and greeted her. Ann didn't remember me.

In the months and years to come, we became good friends. On several occasions, Ann invited me to be a guest speaker in her ESL class at the downtown CCSF facility. It was there that I had the opportunity to observe her amazing teaching skills and to see the overwhelming outpouring of love by Ann's students. She made a positive difference in the lives of so many women and men from various countries. I am saddened to read of her passing. Just last week, I walked down Sloat Boulevard past her home and wondered how she was doing. I am grateful to have known Ann.
