Auguste Lapeyrade Obituary

Auguste Lapeyrade
Passed away suddenly 8/28/2012 in the arms of his caregivers after a 10 year struggle with debilitating Multiple System Atrophy. Born in Cambo-les-Bains, France on 1/1/1935. After growing up in the Basque Country, and following his military service in the French-Algerian War, Auguste immigrated to San Francisco in 1959.
Auguste is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Etiennette (born Sabarots), his daughter Marie-Nicole and partner Donald Holmes, his son Jean-Michel and partner Jeff Fountain, and his son Pierre and wife Shannon (born Cook) and 5 grandchildren: Chantal, Shaelyn, Teagan, Angeline and Nicolas. He is also survived by a large family both in the Basque Country and in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Auguste was an early member of the Basque Club of San Francisco and a founding member of the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco. Auguste was passionate about his garden maintenance and landscaping business he built and ran for over 40 years. A very accomplished and passionate Basque handball player (pilotari), Auguste played competitively into his mid 60's and was known to beat players many years his junior. Dad loved music and enjoyed singing old Basque songs from his homeland. When he became too ill to continue playing handball, Auguste turned to playing mus (Basque card game) as his primary social outlet. Dad's tremendous drive and long fight he waged against this crippling disease were an inspiration to all of us. Dad will be sorely and deeply missed.
Viewing to be held Friday 8/31
2-4pm at McAvoy O'Hara Mortuary 4545 Geary Blvd. SF. There will be a 7pm rosary followed by the funeral Mass on Friday 8/31 at Notre Dame des Victoires Church 566 Bush St. S.F.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to SDS/MSA support group 8311 Brier Creek Parkway Suite 105-434 Raleigh NC 27617 or to Mayo Clinic Department of Development Attn: MSA Research, 200 First St. SW Rochester MN 55905.

Oh, by the way, as part of the Urazandi book project involving Basque immigrants in SF, they published and released a book in 2009, remember when we asked you a bunch of questions about your first few years here? Well the book finally came out and there is a wonderful photo of the pilotaris at Broadway... thought you would like to know.

This morning Nicolas said he could drive and that it was easy. He has driven his American Grandpa's tractor while up in Oregon and he says all you have to do is turn the steering wheel and brake to stop. Sounds easy to me. He also said that he could not wait until he is 16 , just too long to wait, he says. He is still only 5. He is changing so fast. I will keep you posted on his progress. The other day, his American Grandma told us she wanted him to be a priest, but I think he likes girls way too much for that. He says :" I like girls cause they are too pretty!" He is only 5. Like they say in the ol' country, "Ca promet!"
Oh, by the way, I am changing all of my official paperwork to read, "Marie-Nicole" instead of just "Nicole"; I knew you would be happy to hear that. Love and miss you more than you will ever know, my dear one.

Nicolas, now 5 years old asked a nine year old girl, Noelle, if he could kiss her ! Thank Heavens she said "No." How did I find out? Noelle told her Mom and me on the day it happened, Veteran's Day !. Good Lord, is this what your lil' angel has become? A real life Gigolo, Casa Nova? Age 5? Really? Anyway, you taught him well. You would be proud. Love you and miss you.
