Barry Johnson Obituary

Barry Allison Johnson
November 30, 1940 - April 15, 2021
Our dear Barry passed away peacefully in San Francisco, his home for the past 61 years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Tuck, his brother Rodger (Gloria), his children David (Kristy), Charley (Kacie), and Emily Carrington (Ryan), his grandchildren Riley, James, Chelsea, Adalyn, Henry, and Tuckey, and a lifetime of cherished family members and friends. In the spirit of his favorite adage, "Champions Find a Way!", he fought against Alzheimer's with grit until the end.
Barry will be remembered as generous and heartfelt; Always willing to do anything for those he loved. He was kind and spontaneous; Always welcoming to everyone. He was trustworthy and ethical; A mentor and advisor to all.
Barry fondly remembered growing up in Long Beach, CA, and especially cherished his memories of playing baseball at Long Beach Poly High School. He graduated from U.C.L.A with an M.B.A. in '62 and Hastings School of Law in '71. He was a diligent and thoughtful C.P.A. and attorney at D.C. Peek and Associates for over 30 years. As a long-standing PAL baseball coach, he instilled a love of the game in a generation of San Francisco ballplayers who will remember him as passionate and dedicated.
Baseball, volleyball, tennis, golf, croquet, poker, or cribbage; Barry was always eager to play. Neighbors recall him speedily walking the hills of Noe Valley even into his late 70's, and never forgetting to remind them to move their cars for street sweeping. Out-of-town guests were often treated to his "San Francisco Tours," in which he zipped around the hills enjoying the journey and company more than the destination.
We are planning to gather for a celebration of his life in the summer, where all who wish to come will be welcome. But of course, he would be the first to urge you to not feel any obligation to attend.
Our family will always remember his distinctive whistle as he walked up our stairs, letting us know he was home.

The whole Noe Valley and SF community has lost a little joy which Barry radiated whenever I was around him. That wasn't frequent, occasionally in Video Wave, then that trip to see the USA women's team in Santa Clara; but still unforgettable. I am privileged to know him and his family.

I had the honor of riding "shotgun" in Barry's blue Dodge van when he helped ferry Sacred Heart's baseball team to a tournament in Los Angeles in 1992. We struck up a great conversation along the Pacheco Pass, down I-5, over The Grapevine, and toward tne Inland Empire. Barry had a passion for young people and helping them rise! He provideed insightful tips about the Southland to his passengers and introduced me to IN N OUT Burger! Barry may you rest in peace!
