"Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History" was the motto Bettie Mitchell lived. Born to Sam and Anne Berk in Cleveland, Ohio, Bettie had it all - brains, beauty, and moxy. She had a strong will and creative mind Bettie and her family moved West to Los Angeles when she was young. At 16, she dropped out of school to pursue an acting career. Soon after, Bettie married and had 3 daughters, losing her middle child, Melissa, as an infant. Later she happily divorced her first husband and landed a job in the music industry to support her daughters. Working for Chapel Music, Bettie met many musicians and song writers, including Elmer Bernstein & Nat King Cole. She was mentioned in Herb Caen's column as the beautiful red head with Frank Sinatra.
In 1962, Bettie traveled to San Francisco and met the love of her life, Sonny Mitchell. They were married less than a month later and just celebrated their 51st Anniversary on October 19th. Active in politics in the mid 1960's Bettie marched and protested against the Vietnam War and for The Women's Liberation Movement.
In 1964, her youngest daughter was born. In the early 1970's, Bettie and Sonny started the M & M Advertising agency, which won a Clio award.
In the mid 1970's, Bettie tried her hand as an art dealer at San Francisco's first commercial gallery, Cory Galleries. Here she met famous artists such as Salvador Dali, Hiro Yamagata, and Andre Szasz. This was the niche she was searching for. She had found the career that she loved.
In 1980, she opened her first gallery, City Gallery at the St. Francis Hotel, bringing to the public artists including Graciiela Rodo Boulanger, William Tolliver, Charles Fazzino and John Lennon.
In 1993, Bettie and her daughter Desireé opened Gallery 444 on Post Street.
Bettie represented many well known artists, but loved to introduce young new painters. Hosting major shows for international artists including Boulanger, Rafal Olbinski, Alvar, Hessam, and Richard Merkin., she always enjoyed the excitement of watching and helping new artists. Bettie mentored many rising stars who have gone on to make a name for themselves, including Rossmary Valverde, Sarena Rosenfeld, Karla Chambers, Chuck Joseph and William Johns.
Bettie surrounded herself with beautiful things and wonderful people. She enjoyed reading many books each week and was a high stakes gambler that always held a winning hand.
Bettie Mitchell did make history. Bettie sold art in Union Square longer than any other art Dealer in San Francisco. She trained many art dealers, some who have opened their own galleries, and introduced many people and artists into the world of art. She was a legend in her own time.
She leaves behind the love of her life, her husband Sonny Mitchell, three not so well behaved daughters, Heidi Bass, Meg Yerkes and Desireé Mitchell, her son-in-laws David Cogswell and Eric Yerkes, four grandchildren she adored, Benjamin Bass, Melody Rose Mitchell, Samantha Bass, Harmony Anne Yerkes, her brother Bernard Berk and his wife Liyu, plus her furry best friend Gracie.
She will be missed always and with us in our hearts forever. There will be a private memorial service for family only at this time. In Lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity.

Working for Bettie was never dull. She had a passion for art that was palpable. Bettie hired me, on pure instinct, knowing my knowledge and taste in art was limited. She patiently (and sometimes not so patiently) opened my eyes to a wide range of art and artists, and did so with great gusto.
Bettie lived up to her reputation as a fiery redhead, with an inner light that was contagious. Every time I encounter an unfamiliar artist and their works, I think of Bettie, and her eclectic taste in art. She opened my eyes to a world I didn't know very well, and I'm forever grateful to her for that. I think of her, the gallery, Desiree, Heidi and Sonny often and how fortunate I was to have them in my life.

Memories of my cousin Bettie are deeply joyful, her wonderful sense of humor and truly unfathomable generosity of spirit was and continues to be a welcoming presence in my life. It saddens me that she is no longer in our physical realm and at the same time, she continues to be a very real presence in my life and I believe in the lives of all who knew and loved her. In spirit Bettie is and always will be with us, in the very depths of our heart, where all is well and good. I think of her girls often and am so very proud of them. It gives me great joy that Bettie's legacy of creativity, hard work, beauty, humor, joy, love and goodwill still shines forth.

The light of Bettie shines on brighter than ever through the shining eyes of those who loved her deeply and learned well from her beautiful, loving, playful and truly inspiring example.
God continues to bless us all through the love and good works of those she left to follow in her footsteps. Thank you, Des, for reminding us.
Shine on, cousin! xh

80 years ago today, a star was born. A star so bright and beautiful that it still shines bright in my mind. I will never forget you Mom and I only miss you more everyday.

Bettie, I just want to say I am thinking of you now, as I think of you every day...still. I worked for you a long, long time, and we were friends. You are often in my dreams. I wish you were around for our chats, especially when we went out to eat. I miss playing with you, and I miss working together. I even miss our arguments (well some of them, but not all).
I will never forget what you did for me when I was sick, and yours was the hand I felt in the hospital when I woke up, yours was the face I saw when I woke up, and you were there for me every day. Why? Because you said you loved me. I miss you so much. Love, Karen

Bettie, words like gorgeous, magnetic, and sweet only begin to describe the amazing person you were and the incredible warmth that always shone through your eyes. I'll miss gabbing with you about Ben and Sam, who I know meant the world to you. Heidi and Desiree, I saw everyday how much you adored your Mom. She will never be forgotten.

Bettie Mitchell represented a rarity in the Arts. Her genuine warmth, honesty, integrity and sheer class elevated her above any other person I have ever dealt with in all my years as an Artist. She had the rare ability to make Artists believe in themselves and to instil a sense of true worth.
I am a better person and Artist for having the good fortune to have known her. Her passing is a true loss to the Art world but her life leaves us with an example to aspire to.
What an amazing woman.

My cousin Bettie was always gracious, always "on." She lived life to the fullest and on her own terms. She was a shining star, and the nights will be a little darker without her.

Bettie was one-of-a-kind, a real force, an independent and beautiful woman. It was a gift to have known her! She will be deeply missed, but she has left an incredible legacy through her wonderful daughters and Gallery 444.

Bettie was a very bright star in our family! I will always remember her as beautiful, talented, interesting and funny. She was also courageous, creative and a true wonder to behold. Her bright light shines on through her equally beautiful and talented daughters and grandchildren and in the memories and love those of us who knew her best share. Today our hearts are there, in San Francisco . . .

I was so fortunate to have Bettie as a role model in my life. She was a second mom to me. I remember that beautiful red hair, her passion for art, her extreme love for her husband and family, and an amazing ability to dance the night away. I am so fortunate to have had her there. Life was NEVER uneventful with her in it. I love you Bettie.

My memories of Bettie are rich and colorful. As a child I spent quite a bit of time at the Mitchell home on Divisadero Street. Bettie was by far the coolest "Mom" ever! I learned a lot and laughed a lot. It was wonderful to have been a part of what she loved best...her family. Although, it's been many years I just want to say "Thank you!" I'm sure heaven will look even better now that your there :) xo

I'm very sorry to read of Bettie's passing. In the 60s and 70s when I worked for Sonny she was a role model for what a woman should be: strong, caring, clear-headed, brave, funny, creative, and warm. My deep sympathies to Sonny and the family. (nee Kathy Decter)
