I only heard the news last night letting me know that Brendan had died. As I read through the guestbook, I realized how well loved Brendan was, and what a shame his death is. I am sure many of us would receive similar praise. We all touch each others' lives and it is shame that we don't let each other know how we feel about them until we are eulogizing them.
Brendan, I will miss you greatly. Slán abhaile.

I first met Brendan when I was in college. Our fraternity at SFSU had two motorized cable car bar-hopping parties every year. We would bring in 75 or so boys and girls for an hour or so, then move on to Trader Sam's and The Pierce Street Annex. 32 was always our favorite stop because Brendan and Francis would welcome us with big smiles as our boisterous group walked in the door. St. Patrick's Day was another favorite day for us as we always knew we could get in the back door if we mentioned Brendan or Francis's name, avoiding the long line at the front door. Over the years, I got to know Brendan and Francis very well having moved from The Marina to The Richmond in 1996. Over the years we talked about my girlfriends, sports, current events, and politics. I just ended a relationship with a girl named Tracy who I've been seeing for three-plus years. Whenever I came in without her, he'd always ask, "How's Tracy doing? She's a beautiful girl!" He never forgot a name and was quick with a smile and a pint. 32 is the last of the true Irish bars in The City. I'll miss him very much. The traditional Irish blessing couldn't apply more to a man such as he: "May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind always be at your back...May God hold you in the hollow of His hand. Go in peace."

My band got its first big "break" through Brendan at Ireland's. When we first got started, all we were offered by other venues were Mon. or Tue. nights, if anything. When I first spoke to him and described our music, he said, "Sounds good . . how about next Saturday?" We played regular weekend gigs there for 4 years running after that. I even had a birthday party there for myself and he and Francis provided free champagne for all of my guests! Brendan and Ireland's 32 will always hold a special place in my heart.

The last time I saw him, my wife and I had just returned from a vacation in Ireland and Brendan chatted us up one quiet afternoon about our trip and all we'd seen while we stuffed ourselves with pints and that incomparable shapard's pie. I proudly displayed the tattoo I received in Dublin, a shamrock emblazoned with a 32. He seemed to approve, if bemusedly, hahaha. Thoughts and prayers go out to he and his friends and his family from me and mine.
This fine city has lost a great one.

To Monica and Colin,
Brendan gave me my first job when I came to the USA in 1989 and I worked with him at the "32" many many times and chatted with him after closing time somtimes until the sun came up.He always told me how much you two meant to him. Brendan was the most decent man that I have ever met and I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing.I remember playing tennis with Brenden at the Mill Valley Fair one year and we got to the final in the doubles but it was cancelled because some drunken guests began fighting , and Brendan couldn't stop laughing. (I don't know why)
Colin your Daddy is a great guy and he helped a lot of people.
Monica,I am truly sorry for your loss
I will never forget him
God Bless

Having played Ireland's 32 many times over the years, it was always a pleasure to play at a bar where the owner was so supportive of local bands. I'm at a loss for words to think of never again having a shot or pint with Brendan at 1:30am following a gig. He was an incredibly nice man and I hope that his family will one day look past the pain of his loss and think of all the happiness he brought to people. Brendan, you will truly be missed and will remain in our thoughts.

To Brendan’s family:
No words can lesson the pain you feel right now, yet I hope you can find some solace in knowing that Brendan will be loved and remembered as someone with tremendous compassion and generosity, as a man whose heart was big enough for the entire Irish-American community of San Francisco. I recall many nights at Ireland’s 32 when he wouldn’t let us leave until he felt we were going to make it home safe, and when I moved into an apartment in the East Bay with nothing but the contents of my car, Brendan gave me an older television set from the pub. We were more than patrons to Brendan and his co-proprietors, we were friends. For many of us who weren’t from San Francisco, as well as many who were, Ireland’s 32 was our Cheers, a place we felt safe and welcomed. During my years in San Francisco I met a lot of wonderful people at 32, including my wife. I don’t know why Brendan is no longer with us. I can’t believe he’s not behind the bar tonight welcoming someone with the sincerest of smiles, whether a regular customer or a road-weary traveler who—like so many others—knew of the pub at 3rd and Geary long before coming to the city. Nothing will ever diminish the impact Brendan had on so many people. You’re likely to hear that often over the next few weeks. I hope you never stop hearing it. Brendan will be in my thoughts, my prayers, and my heart forever.
God’s peace and blessings to you.

It will be hard to have a pint anywhere knowing that you will not be in body at Ireland's 32. My best thoughts and sympathy to the family and friends of Brendan Daly.

Brendan, you break my heart -- damn Irishman. What a kind, generous soul you are. You touched my life and I will always hear your voice, you left me so many voice mails! "Say, Phil, I was wonderin' if you and the band wanted to play in late August, I have a few dates for you, Phil. Give me a call, Phil, would ya?" You talked about the neighborhood changing, the bars closing -- but you were the survivor. You were the good old days. Thank you so much for the memories, and God bless your family. I hope you are at peace.

My deepest condolences to the Daly family. I met Brendan seven years ago, while living out in the Richmond District. My boyfriend and I spent many nights there a week talking about Ireland, and every day life. 32 became a second home to us before we moved. Brendan's sincerity and kidness made a foggy day warm. He will be missed dearly and never forgotten.

To:Mrs.Daly,Colin, and family - A gentle soul has left us without warning. In his wake, he left a huge vacuum of bewilderment, grief, and tears.I can only hope that the following will give you something to hold to. " No funeral gloom, my dear when I am gone; Tears nor graveyard grimness,Think of me as withdrawn into the dimness, yours still, you mine.Remember all the best of our past moments, and forget the rest. And so, to where I wait, come gently on," I met the man I love at Irelands 32.My blessings to you and yours. To Brendan, "Yes please" was an automatic request for another Guiness. The beer was served with a quick response and a smile. When I first heard of his passing, I shut down for a day and a half;I stayed in bed. Tuesday, the reality kicked in and the flood gates opened into an intense gut wrenching state of tears. I can only say that I've no doubt Brendan is in the arms of the angels and with his God. I'll miss you Brendan; rest now.......

Why is such a hard issue for all of us who were touched by Brendan's gift of booking music & running a gathering place, always with his usual comforting good cheer. He was a fixture in San Francisco and no one who knew him took him for granted.
We will miss his comfort over the years, not to mention coordinating jumpstarts for the careers of all kinds of musicians, comedians & other entertainers, providing the livelihoods from one of San Francisco's legendary Irish venues. 32 wasn't just another watering hole or juke joint because of Brendan; it was a resting place after a weary day in life.
He is in our prayers & good tidings for such comforting memories & gifts.

Brendan was a man who was always willing to give a helping hand. When a man was down and out he would give him a meal and put a dollar or two in his pocket. He never said much, until you knew him then you couldn't get him to stop. I will always remember my uncle Brendan. I even had my Dad name my youngest brother after him, after all Brendan is a good Irish name.
