BRUCE WOOLPERT Obituary

Bruce Wilson Woolpert 1951-2012 Bruce Wilson Woolpert was born on May 30, 1951, in Watsonville, California, to Bruce Gideon Woolpert and Mary Elizabeth Wilson Woolpert. He attended MacQuiddy Elementary School, E. A. Hall Junior High School, and graduated from Watsonville High School in 1970, where he was subsequently elected to the Watsonville High School Hall of Fame. He went on to study for his undergraduate degree in economics at the University of California Los Angeles, graduating summa cum laude in 1974. He continued his education at Stanford University and obtained his Master's Degree in Business Administration in 1976, graduating first in his class. In 1976, he began his ten-year career with Hewlett Packard in San Diego as a Product Marketing Manager, where he was instrumental in creating HP's graphics business. In the early 1980s, he moved to HP's Cupertino Campus to serve as Marketing Manager, and played a key role in establishing HP in the personal computer business. Bruce's grandfather, Arthur R. Wilson, founded the Granite Rock Company in 1900. Throughout his childhood and summer vacations, Bruce worked at various Graniterock locations. On February 1, 1986, he returned to the Company as Co-President, along with his brother Steve. In 1997, the Graniterock Board of Directors elected Bruce to the position of President & CEO, ushering in a new era for the venerable Company. Bruce was a gifted leader and set a fresh and enduring vision for the Company founded on core values that he held dear, including safety, dedication to customer service excellence, the growth and development of Graniterock People, honesty and integrity, and continuous improvement and lifelong learning. Under his leadership, the Company grew to include the Pavex Construction Division in addition to the construction materials business, and developed a multitude of business improvements and innovations resulting in frequent recognition by the industry and widely respected awards, including the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Bruce had a strong belief that a person's life's work was a noble calling, which he embraced by his dedication to the work of the Company and the growth of the Graniterock Team. He was a most principled person, and always emphasized the need to "tell the truth - even when it is not popular." Bruce's sense of humor, creativity, and fundamental belief in people were treasured by all who knew him. Above all else, Bruce is remembered for his generosity to the community and to Graniterock People. No Graniterock Team Member's personal issue was too small and no community need was too great for Bruce to give of his talent, time and resources. Under Bruce's leadership Graniterock supported numerous community needs, particularly in the area of education, for which Bruce had a great passion. Bruce always found time for his friends and family. He nurtured and maintained rich friendships formed from early childhood and throughout life. He loved to attend his son Arthur's many sporting events and supported his daughter Marianne's passion for business and equestrian sports. Bruce would always come home and make sure that everything was perfect. He would eat dinner and then make the rest of the family relax while he would finish the dishes. On the weekends Bruce would make sure that everybody was squared away before he would do anything for himself. Bruce is survived by his wife Rose Ann and his children Marianne and Arthur and his brother, Steve. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services were held on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 13716 Saratoga Avenue, Saratoga, California 95070. In lieu of flowers the Family has requested contributions to the Woolpert Family Foundation, to continue Bruce's legacy in educational programs, Post Office Box 50001, Watsonville, CA 95077.

Memories and Condolences
for BRUCE WOOLPERT

Not sure what to say?

I worked for Bruce for only four years at the quarry. All I can say is, it was a shock to hear of Bruce's passing. I'm glad to say I had many conversations with Bruce, both in his cubical office and in the field, the Brigantino area where I operated the spreader. He was a great man, a leader and an inspiration to many. It goes without saying he is and will continue to be missed.

I took an unorthodox approach when completing a Graniterock employment application back in 2000. I received a call on a Saturday morning. A kind voice said "Hi, this is Bruce Woolpert, CEO of Graniterock. You submitted an employment application to my company. Only one other person has completed an application like that and he already works for me. I don't know what job you will fill for us, but I am certain you will work for us." When I met Bruce, I foolishly insisted that I work in my established profession. I have regretted that decision ever since. I will never forget the lesson Bruce taught me through this experience. I am deeply saddened by the loss of Bruce Woolpert.

I am so sorry to learn of Bruce's passing. I had looked forward to getting together and possibly meeting the family. He touched so many people's lives. He was a model of how to live life. He always had such an easy sense of humor. He loved to tease me about coming into the dorm room smelling like bacon. If I can ever be a resource to the family, please let me know.

My deepest condolences

My sincerest condolences to the Woolpert family. I only jut heard the tragic news today. As a member of the GSB Class of 77 (the year following Bruce's), I knew him and his boyhood friend Wes Clark (who was in my class). Many an afternoon while cheers rallied over us from the Stanford football games, we three were studying in the GSB library. What a sad loss.

Bruce and I grew up in Watsonville and attended both E.A. Hall and Watsonville High, graduating in 1970. Bruce was a true gentleman and his passing is a great loss for all that knew him. We missed him at the WHS 40th Year Class Reunion, but his generosity was greatly appreciated. God bless you Bruce and I'll see you when I see you.

I was was sad to hear about this. Bruce was a good man, employer. My experiences with him in the office, the field, the quarry, meetings, or bbq's etc. Bruce always greeted everyone with bright eyes & infectious smile. And he knew everyone who worked for him by name. He had an impact on my life the last 8 yrs I was with Pavex & the Quarry.
Bruce in gone in flesh, but not in Spirit & certainly not forgotten!

In Memory of Bruce Woolpert- a Great Guy and a Life Well Lived

As I sit down to collect my thoughts and reminisce about Bruce, I have many fond memories of him. Over the years I knew him in many roles and circumstances: as a boss, a friend, a trusted advisor, a husband, a father and most importantly, a great human being.

Although many of the specifics elude me now, I always enjoyed working with and being with Bruce. As they say, I may not remember exactly what he did in certain circumstances; I may not recall specifically what he said at times; but I do remember how he made me feel. And I always felt like he genuinely cared and was willing to do whatever it took to help out. No problem was too big. The odds were never too long. If there was anything he could do to help – he would.

I will forever think of him as a smart, genuine, considerate, open, hardworking, fun-loving, supportive, trustworthy, loyal friend. Whenever I was with him, he created a great atmosphere of camaraderie, spirit, and fun.

Even though we'll miss him enormously, he'll always be a part of us. Because of him we are all better people and that certainly is one of the best measures of a life well lived. Everyone around him is better for having known him.

In summary, I thought I'd try to capture some feelings in a short poem.

Bruce,

Where you go now, we cannot follow
Our paths diverge and stray
But our bonds to you are strong
So you can help to guide the way.

Now you're a part of all of us
And we toil not on our own
You are always with us
And we are not alone.

God speed

I was heartbroken to hear about Bruce. GraniteRock worked on many Caltrans projects and Bruce was one of the most articulate and enthusiastic supporters of transportation infrastructure whom I've ever met. His leadership in the industry will be sorely missed. And he was such a positive, friendly person.

July 8, 2012

I was saddened to read of Bruce Woolpert's sudden death. I worked with Bruce for many years when he was with Hewlett Packard in San Diego and also in the SF Bay Area. He was a transformational leader and believer of the HP Way and he practiced both in everything he did. Our paths crossed again several years ago when my family's Winery sponsored the Golf & Grapes Clambake for a Cure For Brain Tumors Charity Event in memory of my late husband, Lonen Curtis, who also worked with Bruce at HP. The event is done in conjunction with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am and has many Monterey/Carmel sponsors. Not only was Bruce a personal sponsor of our event but a wonderful and caring friend. We talked about the transformational leadership skills, processes and methodologies I was involved in developing at HP during Project TMO, the transformation of HPs Test and Measurement Organization, and how they are still applicable today for any business, project or individual endeavor. I will miss him tremendously and my heart goes out to his family.

Yesterday was a sad day for me. It was a reminder of the great work that Bruce Woolpert did for Santa Cruz county with the annual Fourth of July concerts we did together for many years. As the Music Director of the Santa Cruz Symphony, I loved those programs. Bruce brought some of the best talent to the event each year, and gave me the opportunity to work with such greats in popular music like the Temptations, Little Anthony and the Imperials, the Rascals, and many others.
Bruce was an honorable and exceptional businessman who was the model corporate citizen. He gave back so much to the community he loved.
It is unbelievable that Bruce is gone. My prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends at this tragic time.

I want to express my deepest sympathy. Although I have only spent a week in January 2011 and 2012 with Bruce teaching Algebra at his company to groups of 8th graders from Rolling Hills Middle School by CSUMB professors and student assistants, I feel as though I know him much longer. He was such a generous and caring indvidual. I know he will be greatly missed by all the lives he has touched including mine. My prayers are with your family. The last words I remember Bruce saying to me at the final celebration in 2012 with students and their families was "So, are you going to do it next year?" I am so sad that Bruce will not be here to see that happen again.

I am so sorry for your loss. Bruce was such a nice man and was a shining example of good in life, both personally and professionally. He leaves an indelible mark of that goodness on so many. He was one of my first friends upon moving into town and made me feel so welcome...all the fun pool parties, quarry adventures in the Scout, and that smile and gleam in his eye; which often meant he was up to something, always planning the next great adventure for a bunch of wild teenagers. He was always a leader. My heartfelt sympathies ~ Bruce will be missed.

Greatness sometimes walks among us. Bruce was a great businessperson and a great human being -- as evidenced by these many tributes. For 29 years, I have been so thankful that I went to work for Bruce at Hewlett-Packard when I started my career. He served as an extraordinary mentor and friend to me ever since. He possessed an extraordinary mind, worked tirelessly, and was completely dedicated to making our world just a little bit better every day – things we should all aspire to. Whether it was providing a world-class working environment, taking extraordinary care of customers, or making the time to help someone in need, Bruce made our world a dramatically better place. His kindness and leadership have had a profound impact on everyone he touched. He was a brother to me, and my heart goes out to everyone close to Bruce as we all come to terms with this extraordinary loss.

My dear friend Bruce, (and somebody said some time ago that a friend is a brother that you have the chance to select), asked me; when my dad passed away "tell me what have you learned from him". That simple question gave me the chance to tell him all about my dad, what I had learned from him and that gave me peace. Today, I am reflecting about all the good moments I spent with you Bruce and your family, all what I learned from you and all the pending things that I still have to do in order to be a good man like you, my friend. That thinking is giving me peace again. I will miss you so much.

It's all been said, and still … and still there's more. With Bruce Woolpert, who seemed timeless, there always was more. He was a man of incredible intellect and boundless compassion, and he never seemed to lose his ability to enjoy every kind of human connection. He appreciated humor in all its forms as much as anyone I've ever known. He seemed to welcome – with open arms – all those interesting moments in life that happen when you're least prepared for them. Now, that which we admired most in him is even clearer in his absence. We are left to embrace a past full of his spirit and to carry his remarkable example forward.

So sorry to hear the sad news about Bruce. The Woolperts were friends of the family and my Mom had the pleasure of working there many years. Went to High School with Bruce - he was always a great guy, and it looks like his professional life was no different.
RIP Bruce.

I would like to say thank you on behalf of my family for Bruce Woolpert. I really just met him a few months ago when my father passed away. He was so generous to my father and our family over the 30 plus years he worked for Granite Rock. I know my Dad loved this man and always appreciated his incredible kindness. He also said Bruce was a rare and special person in his position. I was so proud and honored to have met Bruce and send my deepest condolences to his family and Granite Rock God bless you as you move forward without this special man.
Thank You Bruce I am proud to have met you, and thank you from my Father who loved you soooo..... much.

Can't find the words to express the sadness at the passing of Bruce. My Mother, Doris Johnson, taught Bruce to run the switchboard @ GraniteRock when he was only 9yrs old. My Father, Gene Johnson, was his teacher at WHS. The Woolpert family was important in our lives. I know that Bruce & Betsy were so proud of him. When I worked at GR he was very good to me. A generous, caring, ambitious, intelligent man. My condolences to the family and dear friends.

He was, he is and he will be the most extraordinary personality I ever met. His work ethic and generosity was always above and beyond the imaginable. I feel great honor to have him as personal friend for over 30 years. Bruce Woolpert you were the kind of a person that anyone should aspire to be. You will be dearly missed by all that knew you and all that had a chance to meet you. I'm glad that you were in my life and it saddens me to know that I will not have another chance to see you and chat with you. You did many great deeds that you and your family can be very proud of. Goodbye my dear friend. Rest in Peace

I was shocked to here about Bruce. I have been blessed to be able to work at Graniterock and with Bruce. I enjoied talking with him and hearing his story's, his advice, and what he saw me doinging in the future with the company. Bruce was an amazing man, always friendly, smiling, and cared about all of his employees.
Every time we talked he always talked about Arthur and Marianne, no matter what we were talking about, something would remind Bruce of them. Bruce was so proud of both of them.
Bruce thank you for everything you have done for me and believing in me. Graniterock will not be the same with out you.
Rose Ann, Arthur, and Marianne, I am truly sorry about your loss. Bruce will be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear the news of Bruce's passing. My father worked for his father in the sixties and seventies and I had the opportunity to spend time with Bruce while he was attending UCLA. One memory I have is driving his Olds Cutlass in Southern CA. Bruce handed me the keys and said have fun. I was only sixteen or so. Later I worked for the company during the summer. He was a great guy and treated me well. On behalf of my family we are truly sorry for your loss.

Bruce Jr. was an enlightened, brilliant leader who cared about the future of Watsonville and California. He was groomed from an early age to run Graniterock by his parents Bruce Sr. and Betsy, who were once Glemar St. neighbors and remained close friends of my late parents. My condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Woolpert when I was Principal of Edward A. Hall Middle School. He came to meet with our students during a motivational assembly. He was a very generous man and I could tell that he was proud of being a "Falcon". My deepest thoughts and prayers go to all his loved ones.
