Carolyn Lakin Obituary

Carolyn Day (née Perkins) Lakin Born Nov. 28, 1938 in San Francisco to Raymond and Alice (née Norton) Perkins. Passed away unexpectedly in Phoenix, AZ, on June 18, 2006 of natural causes. Graduated from Lowell High School in SF and the University of California, Berkeley. Her two greatest passions (until marriage) were teaching and traveling, triumphing at both. A grammar school teacher in SF, Carolyn worked exceptionally beyond the call of duty until she met the love of her life, John B. Lakin. A world traveler starting early in life, these two events laid the ground work for so many of those stories she loved to share. Her stories spoke many volumes of good entertainment. Carolyn and her husband John had a son together, Joseph Day Lakin. (Mum: you are greatly missed and loved, JDL). A devoted wife, mother, and daughter, she would do anything in her power to better their life. Carolyn also devoted herself to volunteering, including book collecting for Veterans Hospital in Vallejo. If you needed help, she was there. Carolyn was currently secretary of the Ladies Fleet Reserve. Widowed by the passing of her greatest love and joy of life (husband, John B. Lakin, retired lt. commander Navy) since April 2004, her courage (battling MS) and love of life will be treasured by all whose lives she touched. Her smile and joy of sharing will be remembered by all. In addition to her son Joe, Carolyn is survived by sister, Anne; brother, Bill (Ray); nieces, nephews, stepchildren, in-laws and many loving friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 6:30pm this evening at Colonial Chapel, 1000 Redwood St. in Vallejo. Conducted by the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 8 Auxiliary, a Catholic prayer service will follow. Burial (inurnment) will follow later at Arlington National Cemetery, VA, reuniting her with John. Carolyn will be greatly missed. Instead of sadness with this notice, know that she is where she wants to be, with the love of her life, soul mate, best friend and husband, John. Please join Joe and friends in celebrating her life.

I am always reminded that God intertwines special people into our lives for a reason. Carol was more like a sister than a cousin. Carol opened the world to a little girl growing up in Woodacre. After every trip my family waited (Carol and Alice were always late for dinner) anxiously to see the slides/movies from the far off places they visited. We shared countless hours at the house in Lagunitas baking pies, throwing them at each other, playing board games and hiking up the ridge. When Carol took me to the schools she taught in, I was impressed with her devotion as an inner-city teacher. Carol had a big heart, she loved life, and she lived it to the fullest. I know she is on her next adventure along with her beloved John and “mother”. Joe, my prayers are with you, may God’s face shine upon you.

So sorry to read of Carolyn's passing. I met your Mom and Dad when he was stationed at Mare Island. I was at the Bank of America at that time. They were both wonderful, caring individuals. I just happened to visit the SF examiner site today and was saddened to read that Carolyn had died. I am sorry that we lost touch. God Bless you and your family.
