August 1, 2013

Carolyn Stone, age 82, passed away peacefully in her home in Oakmont on August 1, 2013 after a brief illness. Carolyn was surrounded by loved ones, in person and in spirit, as well as her beautiful rose garden.

Carolyn was born in Berkeley, California, the only child of parents Ridley Draper Stone, Jr. and Frances Crane Stone. Carolyn attended Anna Head School and high school in Berkeley and completed her education at the University of California, Berkeley in 1952.

Carolyn worked for years as a ticket agent for United Airlines and also as a secretary for Safeway Stores. An avid traveler, Carolyn visited gardens all over the world and contributed pieces to Pacific Horticulture magazine under the name of Thenie Pearsall, titled "A Gardener's Notebook". With her quick wit and discerning eye, she brought life, color and laughter to all she observed. Carolyn also shared a love of music that rivaled her love of gardening. Carolyn was also a member of the Mensa Society.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, George Waters, cousin and dear friend, Madeline Stone Gilbert, and the many that loved her, including John McCall, Pippa Leary, Gloria Lintner, Megan Hassler and Elsa Ranas.

At her request, no services will be held. Carolyn asked that donations be made to the charity of each donor's choice.

My thanks to Carolyn for all the fun and wisdom. What good times we had; and thanks for starting me on Geranium "Rozanne".
