Charles Hayes Obituary

Charles Patrick Hayes September 12, 1937 - April 28, 2006 Charles Patrick Hayes who spent his life helping others died at home in San Francisco on April 28th after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 68. A devoted family man, volunteer and all around good guy, Charlie was a native of County Cork, Ireland but he called San Francisco home since age 11. Charlie quickly assimilated into American youth culture as a newsboy for various City broadsheets and by attending Seals baseball games. Though Charlie worked as a highly regarded Bay Area typographer and printer for more than 40 years, he was better known for his caring heart and compassion for the less fortunate - not to mention his top-notch woodworking and mouthwatering cooking and baking skills. Other passions included trains, opera, Northern California parks and beaches and the Giants and 49ers. Charlie is survived by Anne, his loving wife of 42 happy years, and three grateful sons: Dan, Tony, Kevin and daughter-in-law, Barbara, all of San Francisco. He is also survived by his 99 year-old mother Margaret; brothers, John and Michael; sister-in-law, Sue; niece, Siobhan; and nephew John. He will also be missed by many cousins and devoted friends, including Linda Gilmore of Walnut Creek, Mike Clancy of Novato and Bob Mitchell of San Carlos. Preceded in death by father Donal and father and mother-in-law, Louis and Ann Bruno. Graduate of Riordan High School, Class of 1955. Charlie was a retired member of the SF Typographical Union Local 21. Family and friends are invited to attend a Vigil on Tuesday, May 2nd at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Ave., Daly City at 7pm. Visitation from 3pm to 9pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 3rd at St. Albert's Priory, 6172 Chabot Rd., Oakland, 94618 at 10am. Donations in Charlie's name may be made to St. Dominic's Church, 2390 Bush St., San Francisco, CA 94115.
