Cheryl Hug Obituary

Cheryl Fackler Hug Cheryl Fackler Hug, 50, passed away unexpectedly Feb 17, 2013. She was born in Oakland, CA and grew up in Cleveland, OH. She graduated from Wittenberg University with a political science degree and received her law degree from the University of Michigan. She worked for Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher in Washington DC where she met and married her beloved husband of 21 years, William Fackler Hug. They began their overseas adventures in Belarus, where Cheryl assisted in the development of the Belarus constitution and helped establish a public law library. They then moved to Menlo Park where Cheryl began working with Sun Microsystems, both in California and Geneva, Switzerland, ultimately becoming Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, Chief Integrity and Compliance Officer. After Sun's acquisition by Oracle she moved to Hewlett Packard where she was a Vice President and Associate General Counsel.

Cheryl raised two wonderful sons with Bill, volunteered at their schools, and was always there for family and friends. She was a fierce advocate for causes in which she believed. She was the family organizer, relied on for vacations and family reunions, and a skilled multitasker.

She is survived by Bill and her sons, Nicholas and Colin, by her parents John and Naomi (Steege) Fackler, her siblings Kathy (John) Chapman, Karla (David) Grafton, John (Lee) Fackler, Dori Fackler, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 10:00am at Roller & Hapgood &Tinney Funeral Chapel at 980 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto.

I have only just learned of Cheryl's death in a letter from Kathy and John. I met Cheryl, all too briefly, many years ago when I was Best Man for John at their wedding, and remember her as a fun and bubbly young lady. I am shocked by the news.

I was devastated to learn of Cheryl's death only today. Cheryl remains one of the top three students I taught at Wittenberg University over a forty-year career. Her intellect in class and her humor remain fond memories. We stayed in touch after her graduation. We even connected in Moscow, where she traveled on a break from her work in Belarus. I shall sorely miss her and feel deeply for her family.

Cheryl was my colleague on the Board of Directors of the ECOA. It was a pleasure to work with her. The beautiful smile highlighted a joyful spirit. She is a treasure that has been lost too soon.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Cheryl's family and friends. Our professional paths crossed every now and then while I was at Dell. I always found her to be an extremely intelligent and empathetic problem-solver. The world needs more people like that and is a lesser place with her gone.

Missing you so much,

March 5, 2013

I just computerized the 6 or so pages of the diary Cheryl and Bill wrote in 1992-93 from Minsk where Cheryl was involved with the creation of a law library and a constitutuon for the Belarus after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Her Russian language skills were of great use. As her father, we (Naomi her mother ) are very proud of her accomplishments.

I was so sad to hear of Cheryl's death. I saw all the emergency vehicles last Sunday, but didn't learn until a week later what had happened. Although we only met in passing, I was aware of what an interesting, dynamic woman she was. Please accept my deepest sympathy, and let me know if there is anything I can do.

Cheryl was a wonderful force of nature. I really enjoyed working with her at Sun and seeing her last year for coffee here in D.C. I find great comfort in the following words from the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, and I offer them and my prayers, to you now:
Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

I still cannot believe that Cheryl is gone. I worked for her very recently at HP, and I really admired her as a person, a mother, and an attorney. She was so smart, energetic, and full of life ... always enthusiastic, happy and looking for that next challenge. I will really miss her. To Cheryl's husband and children, she talked about you guys so often. It was clear how much she loved each of you. I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers.

A gift indeed, John and Naomi. Precious child of God. I would loved to have met her as she was surely a one of a kind. What a life! Such joy! It just glows in this photo! But we will meet again in God's time.

Extremely sad to hear the news that Cheryl is no longer with us. I can only express my deepest sympathy to Cheryl's family at this difficult time. It is two weeks ago that I last met her in Anaheim at a HP leadership meeting. She was in good humor and had a twinkle in her eye. She was looking forward to travelling to Russia and helping our team there. It was very gracious of her to agree to come to Russia knowing that it would involve time away from her home and family. It is difficult to believe that she has passed. When I think of her, I think of a very nice and kind lady.

I am crushed to hear that the world has lost such a wonderful soul. I remember Cheryl fondly from the time we worked together at Sun in the early 1990's. She always made time for friends and co-workers, and that never changed even as she advanced to become a vice president. My heartfelt condolences to her family. May her memory be a blessing.
