Chris Manitsas Obituary

Chris Steve Manitsas MD
07/22/1930 - 02/07/2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Chris Steve Manitsas MD, who peacefully left us February 7, 2025 at the age of 94.
He was born July 22, 1930 in Salinas, California to the late Stavros and Evanthia Manitsas, immigrants from Peramos, Turkey.
He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, graduated from Richmond High School, U.C. Berkeley, and UCSF Medical School ('55). He served in the Army at White Sands Missile Range as an Obstetrician / Gynecologist, where he learned to fly. He spoke fluent Greek and Spanish, with a smattering of German and Turkish. He met and married the love of his life, Martha, in 1966. He practiced medicine in San Francisco until retiring in 1995, and continued to assist in surgeries for the next 20 years, having delivered approximately 9,000 babies. He travelled to over 25 countries around the world. He was trusting and generous all his life. He always was devoted to and made time for his family. He played the violin and was an avid golfer and skier. He loved driving his 1968 Barracuda convertible and flying his Bellanca Super Viking.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; son, Steve and his wife Karen; five granddaughters: Noelle and Vivienne Manitsas, and Christy, Nicole, and Allie Douglas; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter, Alexandria Manitsas Douglas; his sister and brother-in-law, Anastasia and Theodore Georgiou; and his brother-in-law, Dr. James Paziotopoulos.
The Trisagion will take place Sunday, February 16 at 6 pm at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 999 Brotherhood Way, San Francisco. The Funeral Service will be held on Monday February 17 at 11 am at Holy Trinity Church. Interment will follow at the Greek Orthodox Memorial Park in Colma. We invite all who wish to honor Chris to join us for the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. www.holytrinitysf.org/donate

Dr. Manitsas delivered me at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco on January 27, 1965. He also delivered my older sister in 1962 at the same hospital and my brother at Mary´s Help (now Seton Medical Center) in Daly City in 1968.

My mom always told me the story of her OB visits with Dr. Manitsas in her 9th month of pregnancy with me. I was overdue and Dr. M performed a routine procedure that assured my mom I would arrive by the following evening. A week later, and still ensconced safely in my mom´s belly, Dr. M told her..."this time should do it!" One week later he was convinced I had no plans on arriving so he admitted her and started my journey. I always loved that story and made my mom tell it over and over throughout the years.

She has an equally amusing story with Dr. M when my brother was arriving and mom was in hard labor. Dr. M stood at her hospital room door and cheerfully asked, "How are we doing in here?" Mom looked at him and said, "Get this baby out!" He did as she asked.

I never met the man who brought me into this world, but I am so grateful for his humorous bedside manner that lived on in mom´s delivery stories.

May your family find comfort and peace knowing your husband, dad, grandfather is remembered so fondly.

May God´s peace be with you and family during this time.

Respectfully yours,
Roberta Moniz and family
