Our beloved son, Cian Nicholson, tragically left us September 9, 2024. He was 13 years old. He was surrounded by his family as he took his last breaths. Though he fought a good fight to the end, he lost a short battle with his second round of cancer.
The youngest of four, Cian was born and raised in San Francisco. After surviving a brain tumor when he was one year old, he lived a life full of happiness, kindness and positivity for the next 12 years. Although he had to re-learn many skills (such as walking, talking, eating, etc.), he did it all with a smile. Throughout his life, Cian had to work hard to keep up, but never complained or let it get him down. Instead, he was proud of each and every accomplishment, such as walking to school with his friends, playing basketball and making his own meals.
Cian attended Sunset Co-op, Raphael Weill Early Education Center, Francis Scott Key Elementary, and AP Giannini Middle schools. Throughout his school years, he played on soccer and basketball teams, and enjoyed being in several school plays. Cian was passionate about the Warriors and the Niners; he felt every win and loss wholeheartedly. He loved basketball and football and knew just about every statistic there was about these two sports, often correcting those much older than him! One of his favorite things to do was to hang in the garage with his dad and "the dudes," watching sports or classic cartoons and shooting hoops out front, chatting with folks as they walked down 45th Ave. In his free time, you could often find Cian with paper and pencil writing one of his many amazing stories. He loved school, where he got to see his buddies, never wanting to miss a day. He was attending 8th grade up until about a week before his passing. Cian adored his family, his friends and his dogs. He was a source of inspiration, smiles and laughter to all who knew him. Cian was a bright light that will be greatly missed.
Cian is survived by his parents, Dan and Katie; his sisters, Rose and Fiona; and his brother, James. We will feel his absence every minute of every day. We will carry our memories of him and his incredible smile with us forever.
May we all learn from Cian's natural kindness and happiness, always seeing the best in everyone. He was a truly special person who was loved dearly by all who knew him and will be sorely missed. 'Til we meet again.
