Daniel Chadbourne Obituary

Daniel I. Chadbourne, Sr. Passed away at his home in Hillsborough, Ca. on May 20, 2011 at the age of eighty seven after a short illness. Dan was preceded in this life by his loving wife of fifty seven years Marina Carmen Chadbourne. He is survived by his daughter Charlene (Chadbourne) Clancy and son-in-law Terence Clancy of San Mateo, Ca.; and son Daniel Chadbourne Jr. and daughter-in-law Julie Yi of Shanghai, China. Dan is also survived by grandchildren Jean (Chadbourne) Adams of San Carlos, Ca.; Daniel Chadbourne of Oakland, Ca.; and Kelly (Clancy) Devlin of Redwood City, Ca., and three great grandchildren. Dan, or "D.I." as he was known to many, entered the U.S. Army after high school and went into training in the Army/Air Corps. Attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant he was assigned to the Eighth Air Force in Europe where he served as Flight Engineer aboard the B-24 "Liberator" Bomber based in England. He flew 25 bombing missions over enemy territory, as well as numerous humanitarian missions delivering much needed food and medicine to people throughout Europe. After the end of World War II Dan returned home and joined his father, Ivory Daniel Chadbourne, in the family plumbing business in San Francisco. He proceeded to expand the business down the Peninsula, and also expanded the scope of the business to include tank lining to repair leaking fuel tanks throughout the Western United States, obtaining several patents along the way. As a businessman Dan was a member of the San Francisco Plumbers Association, and the San Francisco Business League. His favorite business group was the Golden Gate Breakfast Club of San Francisco where he had been a member since 1958, and was the oldest and longest standing member. His favorite events at the "Club" were the Christmas breakfast with his family, wearing his traditional red sport coat, along with Sam Owens, and the Valentine's Day Dinner. Dan was a also private pilot who enjoyed all aspects of flying. He would spend Saturdays at his hangar, where he and his friend Joe were know at the 'go to' guys for any questions regarding airplane mechanics. He also time spent "hangar flying" with his buddies Joe, Al, and Ted. Dan thoroughly enjoyed the many trips in his plane with his family and friends. Dan and Marina were members of the Peninsula Golf and Country Club since 1962, where he enjoyed many special family times, especially the annual Easter brunch with the whole family. In Dan's later years his favorite thing to do was to go to the Club with his daughter, son and caretaker Seilala, more affectionately known as La La, and enjoy his Southern Comfort Manhattans. A private burial took place at Skylawn Cemetery on May 31st. A Memorial Mass will take place on July 16, 2011 at 11:00 at St Bartholomew's Church in San Mateo. This will be a celebration for Marina and Daniel Chadbourne, Sr. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to your favorite charity.
