Daniel Moriarty Obituary

Daniel (Donie) Joseph Moriarty

Daniel (Donie) Joseph Moriarty, a San Francisco Native and resident of San Anselmo, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016, and is now reunited with his parents, brother Mickey, brother-in-law Jack, and grandson Robert.
Born to Mary O'Connell Moriarty and Daniel Joseph Moriarty on February 11, 1931, Dan's earliest years were spent in Eureka Valley until the family moved to the Sunset's Parkside District where Dan lived for the next 45 years. After attending "the finest, the greatest and the best" St. Cecilia's Grammar School, Dan continued on to St. Ignatius High School and later University of San Francisco. Dan proudly played for both SI and USF's baseball teams. His talents as a catcher later earned him induction into the North Beach/Marina Sports Hall of Fame. After graduating from USF, Dan served as 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army in Germany. Following the army, Dan joined the San Francisco Police Department where he retired as a Lieutenant after 32 years of service. Acquiring a teaching credential, Dan also taught for the SF Unified School District.
A devoted and loving family man and friend, Dan was always there when you needed him. Whether he was instilling the "Men of Kerry" values in his grandchildren or looking in on sick friends, you could always count on Dan. He never asked for much and loved the simple things in life: watching the sun set at Ocean Beach, spending the month of March in Scottsdale for the Giants Cactus League Spring Training, cruising the City in his Chevy pick-up truck, relaxing on his deck at the Russian River with a good book and his portable radio or in front of the TV on his Barcalounger watching his beloved SF Giants, Notre Dame Football or just about anything sports related. He was a friend of Bill W. and had a positive impact on the lives of so many. Dan will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor, infectious smile and love of sweets.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of over 31 years, Elaine; step-children Debbie (Steve), Kathleen and James (Paige) Crowley; grandchildren Michael (Lauren), Ryan, Jason (Estefanie), Jamie, Christina and Erin; great-grandchildren Robert, Thomas, Leah, Kameron, Rose and Baby Jason; loving brothers and sisters Aileen (Tom), John, Steve (Jane), Dennis (Terry), Mary (Jack, deceased), Mike (Dede), and Joe (Carol) and countless nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews all of whom he loved dearly and was most proud.
Friends and family are welcome to visit after 6:15pm and to attend a vigil on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 7:30pm at St. Cecilia Church, 2555 17th Ave. (Vicente), San Francisco. A Mass of Celebration of Dan's life will be held Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia Church, 2555 17th Ave., San Francisco.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, The Daniel J Moriarty USF Scholarship or St. Cecilia's School.

Dear Elaine and family,
I just wanted you to know that you and Dan are in my thoughts and prayers. I will add Dan's name to the petitions when I lector at church on Sunday . He was a kind man and I always enjoyed visiting with him ( and you Elaine) when we were neighbors in San Anselmo. What would start off as a brief visit would turn into an hour (at least) of fond memories of days gone by in SF,the river, and the many wild and humorous adventures of the city Irish luminaries like Dan, my father, Jack Bosque, Harold Caulfield, Joe Kelly, Joe Desmond, and many others. Dan was a good man and will be well received by many friends in God's kingdom. God bless.

To Sweet Elaine and to all of my wonderful Moriarty cousins, you have my deepest condolences over the loss of your beloved husband and brother. Donnie's pain is over and he is at peace with his other beloved family members, including my dad, Mort. It is so difficult to lose someone that you have loved so much. He will be with the best of company and their arms will be open to welcome him. Were it not for an accident, I would be there today with my mom, Marion, and all you. We, from the McInerney Clan, are with you in spirit and love.

RIP, Dan.

My condolences to the Moriarty family and to all his many friends.

Dan was my Lieutenant at Park Station when I was a young sergeant. He was one of the finest bosses I ever worked for.

Dan's easy going, quiet, level headed and intelligent bearing served as an excellent example to all of us about what it is to be a great cop but more importantly a great man.

It was my privilege to have known him and his memory will always be held in high esteem.

Thoughts of Dan Moriarty and those of my wonderful Uncle Jack (Bosque) are inseparable to me: two men whose fun-loving spirits and tender hearts gave us kids some hope that adulthood could be a place of joy. Thank you, Dan. I know you and my Uncle Jack are up there enjoying a good joke together.

Donie, you sailed away from our shore
out the Golden Gate,
You're last trip.
"There, you're gone."
Gone where? From our sight is all.
At that moment
others on the far shore, a great throng,
your Mom, Dad, Mickey,
called out "Here he comes."
And that's dying.
