David Dunn Obituary

David J. Dunn
July 15, 1934 - June 17, 2022

David John Dunn of San Rafael passed peacefully from this world, joining his beloved wife Jan for their next great adventure together.

Dave always put family first, every day of his life. Dan (Karen), Susan, Diane and David (Kara) were the lucky recipients of that dedication and love. He was also a proud, enthusiastic Grandpa and Baba to John, Abigail, Hannah, Emmy, Logan, Cade, Kellen and Maisy.

Dave also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Paul Scannell of Millbrae. He was predeceased by his loving wife and friend of over 59 years, Jan; his parents David and Marie Dunn; and his sister Joanne Dunn Labbe.

Dave was a third-generation San Franciscan and raised in the Parkside District. He was the epitome of "old school": humble, hard-working, self-deprecating, a great storyteller and deeply grateful for the family he grew up in.

From delivering newspapers as a boy, to teenage jobs in Golden Gate Park and at the carousel in the Zoo, he worked tirelessly, finally retiring at the age of 85 after a decades-long career as a stockbroker. His strong, unwavering Catholic faith carried him through good times and challenges.

Dave graduated from Saint Cecilia Grammar School and St. Ignatius High School, where he played basketball and made many lifelong friends. He went on to Stanford University, where he also played on the basketball team, then served two years in the U.S. Army. Dave was a dedicated Stanford fan for 70 years, enjoying many football games "down on the Farm" and winning his share of Big Game bets.

Dave and Jan met in the San Francisco office of Mutual of New York in 1961. They soon embarked on a long and happy partnership of shared values: family, faith, love and laughter. He always said the best thing that ever happened to him was when Jan agreed to marry him. They moved to San Rafael in 1965, where they raised their family.

Dave and Jan traveled the world together. Maui was always their happy place, and Dave loved to report on how many turtles he'd spotted while snorkeling. Trips to the "old sod" of Ireland, London, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Final Four were other highlights. Dave also enjoyed coaching CYO basketball in earlier years, swimming in the backyard pool, and history, especially anything related to World War II.

The family expresses its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Marlene, Joana and Adriana, Dave's dedicated caregivers of the last few months. Their kindness, support (and ability to mix a Manhattan to Dave's liking) will never be forgotten.

Dave's vibrant presence and wit lit up any room he was in. His strength and sense of honor will live on forever in our hearts and memories.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Friday, July 15, with an 11 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Isabella's Catholic Church (1 Trinity Way, San Rafael) and reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Marin County (vinnies.org).

Dave Dunn was one of the finest men I have ever known. He was very professional and very caring. He was my financial advisor but over the years became a good friend. We enjoyed talking about modern Catholicism and politics. He will always be remembered
