1933-2013
David S. Hauer, 79, of San Rafael, died April 12 after a bicycle accident in west Marin.
Dave was born in 1933 in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from St. Victor School in Calumet City, Illinois, Campion Jesuit High School in Wisconsin and John Carroll University in Ohio. He was married to Joan for 48 years.
In addition to his wife, Dave is survived by his daughters, Karen Hauer of Mill Valley, and Janet Harlow of Corte Madera, his sons-in-law, Salim Islam and John Harlow, and his five grandchildren: Kendall, Courtney and Trevor Islam and Henry and Georgia Harlow. He is also survived by his brother and sister, William (Skip) Hauer and Mary Arden Hauer, both of Colorado.
Dave worked for IBM for 30 years as a systems engineer before retiring, after which he launched a second career as a computer programmer. He was a very involved grandfather, attending sports, dance and school events for his grandchildren, whom he adored. He was extraordinarily active as a bicyclist, skier, runner, and handball player. Dave was a lifetime member of the South End Rowing Club and exercised daily at the Marin YMCA. He played bridge his entire adult life and, in the last two years, he discovered Duplicate Bridge, which he played avidly with Joan. A passionate and persistent blood donor, Dave donated over 25 gallons of blood to help those in need.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April 19 at 10:30 am at the Church of St. Isabella, One Trinity Way, Terra Linda.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Dave's memory to the Marin YMCA or Blood Centers of the Pacific.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Hauer family. Dave worked for me at IBM for over 5 years and I remember him as a very thoughtful, kind, soft-spoken person who always had the customer's best interests at heart. He was technically strong and always calm in a crises. It's nice to hear that his was still so physically active, doing what he loved to do in retirement. My thoughts go out to his family during this sad time.

My heartfelt sympathies to Joan and other members of Dave's family. I initially met Dave on the Marin Airporter Ski Bus. When the ski bus stopped running Dave, our friends Rica and Susan, and I carpooled to take many ski trips to SugarBowl and Northstar. We had many wonderful times on those ski trips. We also took a number of bike rides around Marin County. We all commented on Dave's athleticism and he served as a role model for the benefits of maintaining a lifelong active lifestyle. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

My sympathies to the family and especially to Karen. I ride by the house daily on my way to work and remember a really fun slumber party your parents threw for one of your birthdays. Peace and comfort.

I knew Dave as a both a handball partner and opponent and he was always a class act on and off the court. As a regular YMCA attendee, more often than not I'd see Dave there working out, taking great care of himself. He was definitely a role model for us all and will be sorely missed.

I was truly privileged to know Dave from the 1970s as a colleague at IBM. He was a truly genuine and generous person who cared about his wife and family more than anything. He was a great friend. Health-wise, Dave always took good care of himself. Indeed, it is ironic that he died while riding a bicycle, one of the many ways in which he lived an active life and maintained great health and wellness. Carol and I extend our most heartfelt condolences to Joan, their wonderful daughters Karen and Janet, and to everyone in the extended family. Our prayers are with all of them throughout the difficult days ahead.

Uhoh (Dave) was the best grandpa ever. Playing cards, skiing, and seeing him at my soccer games and at other events are memories that I will treasure forever. I love you Uhoh. Thank you for everything.

Mr. Hauer taught me how to pitch a softball and steal bases. This was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard the sad news of his passing. I will always remember his competitive spirit, and supportive and encouraging way. My heart and deepest sympathy are with the Hauer Family.

I will miss our trips together going from our parking spot in Marin City to meet up and then head to South End Rowing Club to play handball. I have been playing for over 40 years and never met anyone his age that played at his level. Matter of fact he won the last game we played together. Rest in Peace.
