Dennis Gregg Obituary

Dennis Gregg
03/07/1943 - 04/21/2024
Dennis Richard Gregg, 81, died on April 21, 2024, in San Francisco, with his wife, Thoa Thi Kim Nguyen-Gregg, and a lifelong friend in attendance.
Dennis was born in Coalinga, Calif., on March 7, 1943, to the late Anne R. Gregg and George R. Gregg. He grew up in the Sunset District of San Francisco, graduated from Lawton Elementary School, A. P. Giannini Junior High, and George Washington High School. He went on to U.C. Berkeley where he graduated with high honors in history, earning a Phi Beta Kappa key in the process. He hung his Phi Beta Kappa key from a laundry room string pull light switch. Pretentious Dennis was not. He followed his Berkeley education with a master's degree in history from Harvard University.
In multiple ways Dennis was a larger-than-life personality. He had an active mind and a quick wit and was always ready with a one liner or a double entendre. He loved to argue, particularly political issues and ideologies. Heated arguments were often followed by a few beers and pretzels.
Dennis was a lifelong social justice activist who never failed to challenge systems of oppression. He was a generous donor to causes of social change and to the individuals at the forefront of social change.
"Mr. Gregg" taught in the San Francisco Unified School District for nearly 40 years. He began his career teaching social studies at Pelton Junior High in the Bayview and then moved on to George Washington High School, where he taught for most of his career. At "Wash" he became head of the social studies department and was repeatedly elected and reappointed to that position. Dennis put great effort into building a really great social studies department at Wash. He used that position to recruit talented new teachers, to mentor them and to help shape their practice. Several of his colleagues noted that he was "very supportive of innovation" by the others in the department as well. In addition to teaching and directing the department, Dennis also initiated and taught AP Economics. His students performed remarkably successfully on the AP Economics exams.
In the wider community of SFUSD teachers, Dennis was an active member of the United Educators of San Francisco and its predecessor, the San Francisco American Federation of Teachers (AFL/CIO). For many years he was the union building representative at Washington. He was the strike captain at both Pelton and Washington when union teachers struck the school district over conditions.
Dennis traveled the U.S. and the world extensively, often with organized groups that made the travels more educational and meaningful. He met Thoa, his wife of 10 years, on one of his trips to Vietnam.
No matter how beautiful or fascinating the places of his travels, Dennis always loved San Francisco best. He enjoyed sharing the city with Thoa, and they regularly took walks through neighborhoods all over the city and surrounds.
Through San Francisco City Guides, Dennis frequently conducted free organized tours of Chinatown and Noe Valley. He also volunteered as a docent at the Asian Art museum, where he was also a storyteller for groups of adults and children.
Dennis Gregg is survived by his wife, Thoa; and his brother, Kevin Gregg of Osaka, Japan. Dennis frequently told his friends that his 10 years married to Thoa were "the best 10 years of my life."
No memorial service is planned. Those wishing to honor Dennis's memory are asked to make contributions in his name to San Francisco's Asian Art Museum, https://asianart.org

I was so sad to learn this. Dennis Gregg was the most influential teacher of my life. He made me think. He challenged my preconceptions. He started me down the road of political activism that lasted my whole life. His lessons consisted of making us write essays to prove our beliefs. I actually still have some of them in a box. I was raised by Republicans and repeated their talking points and on my papers he would write questions that made me think about whether what I was being told (and repeating) was true. It usually wasn't. For decades after I graduated I called him every 10 years to remind me of the impact he had on my life. This is a great loss to students like me.

I was a student of Dennis @ GWHS/Expository Writing in the late 1970s in San Francisco. I’m reading his obituary only now and am truly saddened to read of his passing. I remember him fondly as a teacher that I greatly respected, and whose class I extremely enjoyed (Although not the essays due every Monday for a semester LOL) My sincere condolences to his loved ones, he will be missed by many.

I knew Dennis as a wonderful activist and organizer. He played an important role in the San Francisco teachers union and he was a great writer about those issues and events. After he retired I often had the chance to meet Denns and Thoa for lunch. He was a dear, dear friend and I miss him.

Ah Dennis, one of the great teachers in my life. He recruited me to teach at Washington, having worked with me when I was an inexperienced teacher with little pedagogical background at Pelton Jr. Hi. We wrote a book together with 2 others called The Black Man In the New World. My oh my did we all have a lot to learn in our enthusiasm to improve education for our students at Pelton and on.

He was well organized, kept up to date on pedagogy, believed education was essential and very important. He never got stale, always expected the best from his students and encouraged those of us who worked with him in our efforts to innovate and connect with our students.

Our last contact with each other was when he came to visit us in Sonoma County with his new bride Thoa. I am so happy to know that his last 10 years were the best.

Dennis was one of my favorite teachers. He didn't teach at us. He drew us in. Created us to use critical thinking and have deep discussions. An eye opening, life changing teacher for many (especially for me). He spoke the TRUTH of history.... Workers rights strikes. Civil rights protests etc. Wonderful that he mentored so many teachers to carry on his unique way to really teach and engage students. Thank you Dennis. You will be missed many. I'm so happy to read that your last 10 years were the best. They must have been fantastic. My condolences to his family and dear friends he has left behind. - Sandy W '76 Wash

I hope that you have strong emotional support Thoa.

I was saddened to hear about Mr. Gregg's passing. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting him when he first started teaching 56 years ago at Pelton Junior High School. He was my social studies teacher, a great mentor & subsequently a good friend.

I remember he hosted parties for us (12-14 yrs old) at his home on Ripley St. to provide us with a safe environment to have fun. He would provide us transportation to & from the parties.

The day after the parties, he'd take us volunteer clean up crew to Candlestick Park & let us attempt to drive his station wagon.

We continued to keep in touch when he transferred to Washington High School. He was a positive influence in my youth. I will always remember him for his kindness, soft spoken voice and caring for others.

May you rest in peace,

I was lucky to have Mr. Gregg as my teacher in the 10th grade and in the 12th grade. A great teacher with a greater sense of humor. He challenged me to improve my writing, and I am forever grateful.

Dennis taught (econ/civics) right next door to me at George Washington High School. He was one of the really great teachers while I was there. He would begin each year with each of his classes with the same amazing intro activity. He´d arrange the class in a ring of desks. One student would introduce himself, then the next student would introduce the first person then herself, then the next student would introduce the first person, then the second person, then himself, and so on, until finally as the last person, Dennis would introduce everyone in the class. Pretty impressive. I would occasionally sit in on his class and watch him do a lesson. As a math teacher, I was pleased and impressed that he used mathematics quite often in his lessons. He was a friend and mentor to many of us.

Dennis and I were colleagues on the Asian Art Museum Volunteer Council, where his efforts promoting the Museum as a part of the SF School District's arts programs were essential to ensuring that children had access to this fine cultural institution. His story telling skills were legend among the volunteer community. He no doubt made life-long impressions on thousands of young San Franciscans, who will remember how he brought art to life in his wonderfully engaging style. Thank you, Dennis!

As a fellow storyteller ,i will miss Greg. He was curious and larger than life -often becoming the story rather than the teller!
May he rest in peace. He will be dearly missed at the Asian Art museum.
