Helen (Pernell) Lawson

LANCASTER: Helen (Pernell) Lawson, formerly of Ashland, KY, passed away Wednesday, August 14th at her home at Primrose Retirement Community in Lancaster, OH.

Helen was born May 28, 1922 in Greenup, KY, a daughter of the late McKinley and Amanda (Riffitt) Pernell.

She met and married Junior Leroy (Red) Lawson in October, 1942. Helen and Red were blessed with seven children; seven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Helen loved children and the neighborhood children called her Mama Helen.

Helen was a hard worker and was employed at several jobs, but at heart, she was a homemaker. In her later years, she volunteered with the Touching Little Lives foundation where she helped with making over 2000 quilts for children at local hospitals. Helen was a member of The Pickerington Senior Center in Pickerington, OH. Helen loved to travel and made several trips with the Pickerington Senior Center as well as other trips.

Helen was a loving and caring person who was defined by her belief in God and her love for her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy (Red); her son, Fred Lawson (Grady) of Indianapolis, IN; and her daughter, Kathy Grubb (Willard) of Ashland, KY.

Surviving are two sons, Jim Lawson (Sue) of Louisville, KY and John Lawson (Marlene) of Franklin, OH; three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Patty) Fields of Ashland, KY, Mrs. Michael (Debbie) Little of Canal Winchester, OH, and Mrs. Charles (Fran) Johnson of Lancaster, OH; seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

The visitation and funeral will be Monday, August 19th at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, KY. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm with the funeral at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery in Ironton, OH.
