Derek Rice Obituary

Derek Lorne Rice Passed away on April 22, 2008 at home naturally in his sleep. Beloved son of Kim Rice and Steve Rice; cherished fiancé of Maricris Desiderio; also survived by his hero and grandfather, Harvey Ruffell; his uncle Scott Ruffell, as well as many other aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a proud fourth generation IBEW Local 595 electrician, who also enjoyed working out of Local 6 for the San Francisco Chronicle. Last year he started and became CEO of his own company, Helios Electrical Construction, Inc. He introduced his cousin, Casey Rice, to the trade and brought him on as his first apprentice. Derek was an entrepreneurship major at the University of San Francisco and also aspired to study law. He was recently baptized, received communion and confirmed at St. Ignatius. Derek enjoyed many interests, mainly aviation and ships, and became a pilot at 16. Surfing in Pacifica, playing hockey and mountain biking were also activities he did avidly. He had a great sarcasm and sense of humor. He achieved far more in his 26 years than what most would accomplish in a lifetime and will be missed by many family members, union brothers and friends. Mass will be celebrated at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco on Monday, April 28 at 10 A.M.

I hate that we are just hearing about this now... nearly three months later. Victor and I went to school with Derek and used to live across the street from his grandfather on Via Mesa. I am sooo sorry to hear about this...the world will seem a little colder without him... he was such an amazing person.

Our thoughts and payers are with you.
