Edward Culin Obituary

Edward Lewis Culin, lll
May 29, 1926 - July 2, 2021
Edward (Ed) Lewis Culin, III passed away quietly at home in Oakland, CA on July 2, 2021, at the age of 95. Ed was preceded in death by his father Edward, mother Hazel, wife Arlene, sister Bette and his longtime companion, Alice Bennett.

A native Californian, Ed spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area attending Crocker Highlands Grammar School, Piedmont High School, Stanford University and US Navy pre-flight school. He served as a Navy pilot with distinction during the Korean War.

He attended Stanford University where he majored in business and played football. He was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity, graduating in 1950. He remained a dedicated Stanford athletics supporter throughout his life, was a football season ticket holder and rarely missed a game.

He married Mary Arlene Kennedy in 1955, they moved to Oakland and raised two children, Lisa and Ted. He worked in the financial sector in San Francisco for 40 years, starting his career in 1957 as a stockbroker with Brush Slocumb & Co. and retiring from Morgan Stanley.

Ed was a competitive athlete, he played golf and worked out at the San Francisco Olympic Club where he was a member for 67 years. He competed until age 90 in their annual Strength and Fitness competition.

He loved road trips and fishing adventures with his family. Later in life he and Alice traveled and studied around the world with Stanford Alumni Travel Studies.

He and his family share a love of animals and they brought him joy and amusement throughout his life. He had fond memories of taking care of horses in the Salinas Valley during the summers of his youth.

He had lifelong friends and remained close with his childhood buddies. He will be remembered for his warmth and sense of humor, his words of encouragement and as someone his family and friends could always count on.

Ed is survived by his daughter Lisa of Berkeley, CA; his son Edward (Ted) and daughter in-law Rhoda of Tigard, OR; his granddaughters Carly and Erin of Oregon; his niece Janet Cowel of Evanston, Ill and his nephew John Hollister of Portland, OR.

There will be a private celebration of Ed's life for family and friends. He will be laid to rest at the family plot at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Colma, CA. A contribution in Ed's name may be made to your favorite charity.

I was a colleague of Ed for many years at Morgan Stanley. Ed was a real gentleman. I always enjoyed hearing his stories and talking about different golf courses. RIP Ed.
I'm sorry for your loss.
