Edward Gallagher Obituary

Edward Owen Gallagher A man who loved his family, his friends, his faith and San Francisco, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2010 at the age of 90. Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Virginia Anne Scully. He is survived by his beloved children, Edward Peter of New York, New York, William James of Portland, Oregon and Joan Marie of San Francisco and his grandsons Liam, Michael and Peter Gallagher. Throughout his life, Ed always made time for family. And his family made time for him. Ed was uncle to Pat O'Connor and Greg Jennings, Jean O'Connor-Stornetta and Ase, and Eileen and Ron Wilcox on Virginia's side of the family. On his side, he was uncle to Antoinette (Terry) McIntyre, and Nancy, Julie, James and Martin Gallagher. Ed was born on October 25, 1919 to William and Julia Gallagher, immigrants to San Francisco from County Donegal, Ireland. He had two older sisters, the late Nell (Paul) Merz and Madge Gallagher. He is survived by his younger brother William Gallagher. Ed grew up on Mississippi Street in the Portrero District. He attended Saint Teresa's Grammar School and graduated from Lick-Wilmerding High School (class of '38). Over the years he was an active member of Saint Teresa's, Saint Anne's and Saint Cecilia's parishes. Ed, did his share of volunteer work with those parishes and with Son's In Retirement. Ed worked as a pressman for 38 years for the San Francisco Newspaper Agency through good times and tough times with the Call Bulletin, The Examiner and The Chronicle. Ed was active in his union as a 20-year trustee of the Health and Welfare Committee of the Web Pressmen and Plate makers Local Four. Ed spent his last days at the Pacifica Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. His family would like to thank the staff members at PNRC for their kindness and wonderful care. Friends and family may visit after 3:00PM on Sunday and attend the Vigil Service at 5:00 pm, October 24th at SULLIVAN'S FUNERAL HOME 2254 Market St. bet Noe and Sanchez Sts. San Francisco. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 25th at 11:00 am at St. Thomas More Church, 1300 Junipero Serra Blvd, San Francisco. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. The family has asked that donations be made to Saint Teresa of Avila Church, 390 Missouri St., San Francisco, CA 94107 or to a charity of your choice.

Joan and family,
May God bless you at this time of sorrow. I met Ed at the, Pacifica Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. I was his roommate, for all most 2 months. He was a pleasent man, he liked candy and the caregivers. I also belong to the SIRs. Ed & I played bingo. He will be missed by all, who knew him. Trust in God, He will comfort thee.
