Edward Murphy Obituary

Edward (Eamon) Joseph Murphy

April 18, 1955 - January 3, 2019

Eamon Murphy, age 63, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at his home in San Francisco surrounded by loving family and friends.

Born on April 18, 1955 in Coachford, County Cork, Ireland, he emigrated to San Francisco in 1979. A force of nature with tireless energy, Eamon was a man of infinite generosity and humility, a quick wit and frequent turn of phrase in his enduring Irish brogue. Eamon arrived in San Francisco with a stubborn work ethic and became a successful builder and property owner. He embodied the American Dream of hard work, and love of God, country and family.

Eamon a devoted, attentive father and a trusted, loyal friend was always willing to lend an ear and offer his help. His wry smile and twinkling eyes were a steady and reassuring presence for many in both his adored San Francisco and native Ireland. Eamon, an avid reader, loved good food, history documentaries, a Rolling Stones concert, an opera or theatre performance, and a sail on San Francisco Bay. He started and finished every day with a cup of Barry's Irish tea.

Possessing a strong affinity for kinship and the power of bringing people together, Eamon unfailingly reached out to those he knew and loved, to inquire, inform, include and instruct.

He asked of others nothing more than he would be willing to do himself. Eamon's inner strength and deep and abiding faith, unique sense of humor, and warm-hearted, generous nature, informed by a steady altruistic spirit, will be missed but never forgotten by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his mother Eileen Rose Murphy (nee Hinchion) and father John Francis Murphy. He is survived by his cherished and dutiful sons Johnathon and Edmond Murphy and his longtime companion Denise LaPointe, his brother Sean Murphy (Marie) of Coachford; and his nephews John Murphy (Thuy) of San Francisco and Gregory and Eamon Murphy of Coachford; his many beloved cousins including John Hinchion (Clare) and Ronan Maher (Erin) and their families of San Francisco; and Liam, Frances, and Ray Lynch of County Cork Ireland; his trusted right-hand, Jorge Luis Pascual, and legions of dear friends and relations.

His family wishes to extend the deepest gratitude and thanks to his Home Instead caregivers; Les McGee and the Kaiser Hospital doctors, nurses, attendants, and the entire hospice care team especially JoAnn Hahn, Eimear Cody, Molly O'Brien; Dr. Kandice Strako and Dr. Clifford Sewell; and many others who provided their love, expertise and gifted care.

Family and friends are invited to visit beginning at 6 pm followed by a Rosary Vigil at 7 pm on Monday, January 14, 2019 at McAvoy O'Hara Evergreen Mortuary located at 4545 Geary Boulevard, San Francisco. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 10:00 am at St. Ignatius Church, 650 Parker Avenue, San Francisco. Private burial services to be held by his family in Ireland.

Eamon was a strong Irishman,
A great San Franciscan,
And an amazing full time
human being.

He was always good to be around
because he was always hard working full of goodness.

His way of saying things were always good to hear.

His brogue and himself will be sorely missed by us all.

He always put a good strong smile on my face
Whenever we crossed paths.

I first met Eamon when I purchased a condo in a new building he had built in the Marina after the earthquake. He was a great builder who stayed involved in the building and was always responsive to the owners. I had a casual relationship with him and always found him friendly. A few years later I was at the Golden Jubilee for my uncle Ed Murphy SJ, a Jesuit, when I turned around and found Eamon and his family sitting behind us. I asked him what he was doing there and he said he was there for his cousin, my uncle. From then on he always greeted me as his cousin whenever we met. Eamon was a true gentleman and a friend to many. He left us much, much to early.
