Elizabeth Hopper Obituary

Elizabeth Hopper
June 23, 1939 ~ January 10, 2021
We celebrate a life full of family and love as we mark the passing of Liz Hopper (Sweeney) at the age of 81. She was greeted at the gates of Heaven by her parents: Francis and Clara Sweeney, husband John, daughter Mary and brothers Michael & Bernie. Liz was a proud San Francisco native.

Her brothers: Jon, Dennis, Bernie and Michael lovingly referred to her as "Sister." A fierce protector of them; this became a lifetime foundation of deep love and respect. Kathy O and Jan were the sisters she never had; they held a special place in her heart.

Liz went to Holy Name and was a proud graduate of Mercy High School, Class of 1957. Five of her daughters followed in her footsteps and her granddaughter, Theresa became the first 3rd Generation Graduate.

Liz and John met roller skating at Playland. They married in 1958 and were the loving parents of Jolene, Lisa(Philip), Terry, Tony(Sheri), Missy(Kevin), Mary, Michele(Kevin) and Angela(Chris).

Liz and John settled in the City's Sunset District to raise their family. Their home was always open and welcoming. She was a mentor and surrogate mom to so many, especially Kathy, Lori, Sue and Marlene. She was a selfless foster mom to 58 pre-adopt infants; a true labor of love.

Liz became a fixture at St. Gabriel's School. The mom who drove her van to every game, filled with kids. Later becoming the Gym Director; a force to be reckoned with! She was strict and soft all at the same time. Liz was a champion of women's sports equality in its earliest days. St. Gabriel's recognized her with a volunteer award that is still given to this day.

25 fun filled summers were spent at OFRC on the Russian River. Ma & Pa were innovators of glamping; their campsite included 4-walls, grass carpet, a full-size kitchen, movie theater, slept 50, and no shortage of food & drinks. Endless laughter and organized chaos created the fabric of our lives.

In the early 90's, Liz and John retired to their dream home in Santa Rosa. There, Liz became beloved "Ma" to 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. In true "Liz spirit" she became an indispensable part of her grandchildren's lives. Ma & Pa attended every game, event and activity and hosted many family parties. The house in Santa Rosa became the center of the family.

After John's death, Liz lived in a vibrant senior community in Rohnert Park. Here she blossomed, enjoying the company and friendships of other women. She entertained her friends with her sense of humor, game playing ability, puzzle expertise, her beautiful long nails and amazing crocheting skills.

Our hearts have all been touched by Liz. She's the one that was always right there at the right time, arms outstretched, ready to help others in need. The wisdom she shared with her grandchildren and her unwavering generosity are her legacy. Her devilish smile & wicked laugh told you that an adventure was around the bend and you wanted to be part of it! She made our world a better place.

The family would like to thank Hospice by the Bay, and especially, her grandchildren Theresa and Roque for her care.

Donations can be made in Liz's honor to Hospice by the Bay or Angels in the Outfield: a local organization that helps high school students in need. Contact Lisa at [email protected] for more information.

Due to pandemic restrictions, a private ceremony will be held.

Mom my heart aches and life will not be the same without you. I’m just thankful that you are not in pain. I’m also thankful that we had you as long as we did and that you got to see my beautiful grand babies. I only hope I can be half the grandma that you were....I love you and miss you. RIP Ma.
