Eugene Duggan Obituary

Father Eugene F. "Bud" Duggan

May 2, 1921 – November 7, 2014

Born May 2, 1921, he was 93 years of age.
Father Bud was a second generation Berkeley native, the fifth of seven children raised by Mary Agnes Duggan and Philip Michael Duggan in their loving, Irish Catholic home at the corner of Parker and Dana (a home moved to that site by Philip's father, Robert Duggan, and the same home that Philip was raised in). Father Bud was predeceased by his parents, Phil and Aggie, his six siblings, Robert, Philip, Ray, Sister Claire, SNJM, Fr. Paul, and Fr. Bill, and his beloved Uncle Fr. John Duggan. "Uncle Bud" as he was affectionately known by several generations of nieces, nephews and cousins here and in Ireland, will be deeply missed by all. All loved seeing him on his many travels, although we were rarely given any notice to prepare for these visits, because he was so determined not to be a "bother". And, he never was!
Following his Uncle, Father John Duggan, into the priesthood, Father Bud was ordained on June 15, 1946, at St. Mary's by Archbishop John J. Mitty. With his proud parents and siblings all in attendance, he celebrated his first Mass at St. Augustine's Church, in Oakland, the parish in which that they had all grown up and attended school. Within the next several years, his two younger brothers, Paul and Bill, followed him into the priesthood and were also ordained in the Archdiocese.
Father Duggan was first assigned by Archbishop Mitty to St. Jarlath's Church in Oakland. In the next 20 years, he was assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Redwood City, Most Holy Redeemer Church in San Francisco, St. Brigid Church, and then was named resident chaplain at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose. In 1969, Father Bud became pastor first at Our Lady of the Wayside Church in Portola Valley, and then at St. Denis Parish. In 1983, he was assigned as pastor of Star of the Sea Church in Sausalito. He retired there in 1994, but remained as Pastor Emeritus until 2012. He then moved to Nazareth House, an assisted –living facility in San Rafael.
All who knew him, respected and loved this very humble man and devoted servant of God. Friends may visit Friday, November 14, 2014 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea, 180 Harrison St., Sausalito, CA, Rosary to follow at 10:00 a.m., followed by the celebration of the Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. Donations in his name may be made to "The Priest's Retirement Fund", c/o The Archdiocese of San Francisco, One Peter Yorke Way, San Francisco, CA 94109.

Though I did not know Father Duggan for very long, nine years after his passing his twinkling eyes, brilliant smile, and kind demeanor vividly remains in my memory.

Very fond memories of his many visits to Ireland. A real gentle man who will live forever in our memory.

As saintly a man as ever wore the cloth. Warm, friendly, approachable, self-effacing, shy he epitomized all that can be good in a clergyman. If only there were more like him.

I knew Father Duggan at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in the 60's ... what a wonderful person!!

I met Father Duggan several years ago at First Cafe, a bakery on the corner of Geary Blvd. & 23rd Ave. in San Francisco. He was a regular meeting up with his good friend Rick and others to pass the time discussing everything under the sun and enjoying an apple turnover. He drove from Sausalito and was still driving himself to join his buddies after he moved into assisted living in Terra Linda. He was a very kind man, always cheerful and positive. I don't believe he had a mean bone in his body. I will miss him very much.

Father Bud was a remarkable, down to earth, giving and heartfelt gentleman. With him goes the last of my grandmothers era and family. I will always remember my time with Uncle Bud fondly, both as a child and as a much more mature adult. His kindness and love was always appreciated. Godspeed Uncle Bud. Many prayers and much love your way. My heart will remember you always. RIP

I served Mass for him many times at St. Brigid's Church. I still have the book he signed when I entered the Christian Brothers. Rest in Peace, my friend. Live Jesus in our Hearts.....Forever.

Fr. Bud was a Saint his attention to people of all ages and his concern for them was endless. He loved Ireland and more especially his County Clare. He loved his family dearly all over the world but he loved God most of all and served him well. What a basketball player what a sportsman what a family man what a friend and neighbour what a privilege to have shook his hand to have prayed with him to have laughed with him to have shared desert with him to have spent a day at the Bog in Mount Callan Inagh Co. Clare with him. How sad is our hearts at the loss of our Fr. Bud. May he Rest in Peace in the arms of Our Lord.
