When I remember Florence I smile. I met her through the League of Women Voters of the Salinas Valley. We were at many meetings and volunteered on many projects together. I always remember something she said to me when we were touring a prison in Soledad, CA. We were going down steps and she said, I can tell you aren't old yet Stephanie, you don't hold onto the handrail when you walk down the steps.
I tried reaching her after she left Salinas but was never successful. Condolences to her family.

I met Flo through her daughter/my friend Linda. When Flo moved to Salinas, she became my neighbour, walking buddy, confidant, and eventually local grandma for our three kids. Flo tucked 30 people into her little home for dinner the night before our wedding, and spontaneously invited a crowd of small kids and far-flung friends the next day to help us open presents. The smile in the photo above is so Flo! Feels like she is right here with us.

Rest In Peace. I had the privilege of meeting Florence during her career in Salinas. Great human being with a very kind heart ❤

Flo was an amazing back-up mama to me and so many of Tasha’s friends when we were teens... Her kitchen was a place that you could go and hang out and talk about just about everything. By the time we cooked a bunch of delicious food together, she would have organized us all to read plays out loud together or sing madrigals. She was always a delight to talk with and her open mind and curiosity about life always inspired me.
She raised phenomenally wonderful children who I treasure.
She was an amazing mother, teacher, mentor, friend and she inspired many people younger than her to open up, reach for our dreams and be decent human beings no matter what came along in our lives.
Flo was a gift to the world and her spirit will continue to move things forward in good ways for many generations to come.
