Frank Gilliard Obituary

GILLIARD, Frank Daniel - Professor emeritus of history at CSU East Bay, Dan Gilliard succumbed to pneumonia at Alta Bates Summit Hospital, surrounded by friends, on August 1, 2005. He was born on February 12, 1937, in Clarks, NE, but moved as a child to Jacksonville, FL. A graduate of the University of Florida, he spent two years in the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of lieutenant, J.G. After receiving his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, he taught in the History Department at CSU Hayward for 36 years, serving as chairman for three years. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Rome and the author of numerous scholarly articles. He is survived by his cousin Ray Van Sickler of Jacksonville, FL. As he wished, the Neptune Society is arranging for the scattering his ashes at sea. Memorials in his name should be sent to Project Open Hand, 3443 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, CA 94608.

Dr. Gilliard was an exacting teacher. I took several classes with him at CSUH. He became, formally always formally, a friend and I treasured his erudition and his generosity in sharing the truths contained in historical inquiry. He had a typed quotation from R. G. Collingwood on his office door that said:
"But, of course, it [History] was no longer a `closed´ subject. It was no longer a body of facts which a very, very learned man might know, or a very, very big book enumerate, in their completeness. It was an `open´ subject, an inexhaustible fountain of problems, old problems re-opened and new problems formulated that had not been formulated until now. Above all, it was a constant warfare against dogmas, often positively erroneous, and always vicious in so far as they were dogmatic, of that putrefying corpse of historical thought, the `information´ to be found in text-books. For in the history of philosophy, as in every other kind, nothing capable of being learnt by heart, nothing capable of being memorized, is history." He was a wise man. By the time I finished his historiography class and my senior capstone course I was unafraid of the perils of graduate school. Descansa en Paz!
