I just now learned of Jerry's death, and my heart is heavy. What a joy it was to work with him on many endeavors over time. His depth of policy knowledge and expertise was unparalleled, and he was unfailingly generous with his time and wisdom. But the greatest gift was Jerry himself--a wonderful human being with such great warmth, good humor, and joie de vivre. Being on a team with him made work a pleasure. I am deeply honored to have known him, and I have no doubt that his memory is a tremendous blessing to his beloved family and many friends.

1963 Armijo High School graduate. Mr. Hayward was our Problems of American Democracy instructor. He was bright--warm--caring--thoughtful--supportive and dedicated. A great sense of humor. A role model for
all of us who wanted to learn to teach.

Jerry Hayward was my first Chancellor when I came to the California Community Colleges, Chancellor´s Office in 1981. I grew to admire the man behind the voice of promoting a California community college education and was Jerry's commitment to higher education influenced my overall decision to work at the Chancellor´s Office for over 33 years...may Jerry Rest in Peace and my sincere condolences to the Hayward family.

I was very sorry to read of Jerry's passing. I knew the past years had been difficult. I came to know Jerry because my sister had been Linda's housemate at UCB. The family connection became deeper because Jerry's work intersected with my father's work at the Calif. Dept. of Education. Both were the products of Calif's Junior/Community College system and of UC Berkeley. They were kindred spirits in wanting to make higher education available to all.
I offer my deepest sympathy and condolences to Linda and family. Jerry made many great contributions to our state and we are all a little richer for his having been with us.
