Gino Cimoli Obituary

Gino Cimoli Former major-league baseball outfielder Gino Cimoli passed away in Roseville, CA. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, following a lengthy illness. He was 81. A native San Franciscan who grew up in North Beach, Gino was a naturally gifted athlete and he excelled in basketball and baseball at Galileo High School. Gino's professional baseball career spanned 17 years beginning in 1949 when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In honor of the historic Opening Day game between the Giants and Dodgers at Seals Stadium, on April 15, 1958, Gino was chosen by his manager to be the lead-off batter. Thus, Gino became the first major-league batter on the West Coast. Gino was a member of the 1956 National League Champion Brooklyn Dodgers and the 1960 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Following his retirement from baseball in 1965, Gino began a 25-year career with UPS in San Francisco. Gino remained active with the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club in North Beach. Gino is survived by his wife, Irene Cimoli, his daughters, Cheryll Keast (Terry), and Linda Cimoli (Ron), three grandchildren, Rachael (Rodrigo), Spencer, and Matthew, and one great-grandchild, Fiori, and his companion Lorraine Vigli and her family. A Catholic Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 18, 2011 at Saints Peter and Paul Church located at 666 Filbert St., San Francisco. Private interment will follow in Santa Rosa. A Memorial Celebration of Gino's life for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions in Gino's name may be made to: Galileo Athletics, Attn: Bettie Grinnell, 1150 Francisco St., San Francisco, CA. 94109, or to the charity of your choice. It was such a sad day when I learned of your passing Big G. We always had such great times when Lello and I and you and Lorraine were together. About 3 yrs ago I was in SF and it was decided Marcelo´s would be a. Good place to celebrate. I asked one of the "older" servers if he remembered Gino Cimoli. He went behind the bar and pulled your signed picture out of a drawer! Of course we had a toast and another Manhattan. RIP my friend. Cuban cigars up there??!?? Love you always, Jan Weagraff, Rancho Santa Margarita CA

times he appeared to be intoxicated but never drank."May he R.I.P.

My name is Bob Monsour, and I'm old enough to remember well Gino's role in the 60 World Series. He had an infectious laugh and a fun-loving nature. In addition to leading off the penultimate 8th inning rally that set the stage for the dramatic final chapter, Gino had the most memorable line of all in the locker room interviews following the game. "They broke all the records and we won the games." The line broke Bob Prince up, and was passed on fondly through the years. God bless you, Gino. You left Pittsburgh, and the world, better for your having been a part of them.

Gino it seems that everyone you have ever known during your lifetime has never forgotten you. This latest addition to your Guest Book testifies to the fact that you are very well remembered.

Lots of baseball facts have been entered here but does anyone know that back in 1949 you played right field in Ebbots Field for the Brooklyn Dodgers? At the time Chuck Connors played first base and Jackie Robinson played center field.

Chuch Connors went on to Hollywood and Robinson eventually retired from the game. You must have enjoyed those memories of having played with them.

You left quite a legacy for us to remember.

I remember him from the 1960s. At one point he played for a minor league team briefly and came to Little Rock, Ark. in a game against the Arkansas Travelers.
Some redneck fan kept heckling Gino and finally he got enough and yelled back at him.
His Italian nature was too strong to be taken for granted. Read his obituary and noted that a requiem Mass was celebrated and that he is buried in a Catholic cemetery.
A real heads up guy. His statistics weren't bad. He was an asset when called upon like in the 1960 World Series when he came on after Bob Skinner was injured and played in Games 2-6. The Pirates stunned the hallowed Yankees,10-9, for the title.
Gino had World Series experience with the Brookyn Dodgers in 1956 -- the Bums' last WS appearance before moving to LA -- and Pittsburgh.

My name is Mei Owyang, nee Wong and I knew Gino while attending Galileo High School in the late 40s. In those days, Civics was a required course students had to take in order to graduate and Gino had difficulties passing this class. Mrs. Alpers (?), the teacher asked me to help tutor Gino and I agreed to come to school earlier each morning. I don't remember how long this took. The good news was that he passed Civics, graduated from Galileo and went on to a brilliant career as a professional Major League Player.

Its hard to believe Gino is no longer with us. I have many memories of him. Always a few days after leaving my home, I would find his cigar stumps in my plants! I think he ate more of them than he smoked. A wonderful giving, caring man who had so many stories. I know he is dancing to "Sweet Lorraine". What a dancer he was!! We always had fun and too many manhattans. Rest in peace handsome.

Gino is truly a North Beach legend and was probably the best all around athlete I have ever seen. We grew up together in North Beach and played many baseball games together as kids. I would like to see a memorial plaque placed at the Joe DiMaggio(North Beach) playground in his honor. Gino will be missed by all who knew him and I will miss seeing him at Marcello"s Restaurant on Saturday nights.

It hurts to believe that you are really gone, Jinx. You were truly "one of a kind" and WE in Brooklyn loved you. This world will be a little sadder without you in it because you always brought such joy to OUR DODGERS. You have now joined Kenny, Gilda and Millie, #9, and it would be fun to see which one "out-jixes" the other. Thank you, Gino, for all the wonderful memories....WE will never forget you.

Well Gino you finally made it to the home stretch. After you crossed the finish line, you were guided directly to the winner's circle. You always more popular than you ever realized. You left us with so many wonderful memories.

Of all the guys in the world who smoked cigars, you are the only person that I can remember who could walk around eating one.

Gino was a colorful man around North Beach.I would enjoy hearing his stories about the day's of real baseball. I intruduced Gino to my father in-law Bill Siskin at Ceasar's Restuarant one evening. Bill knew more about his stats than he did.Gino said "that Bill remembers more than I forgot".
Gino was a hero when I needed a hero.

Gino had a big heart in helping people. One of our work colleagues was seriously injured in a vehicle accident at UPS.He took it upon himself to start a fund raiser in our center. He was your typical Italian, with that cigar off to the side of his mouth, asking you to "GIVE VERY GENEROUSLY"
Gino never lived a life of could have, should have....He lived life to the fullest.
My thoughts and prayer's go out to the Cimoli Family.

My condolescences to Lorraine, Cheryl, Lynn and Gino's Family. He was a well respected man who made the world around him a better place. I remember sitting next to Cheryl at St. Brigid's School during that historic Pirates' victory in the World Series. I remember when he joined the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club and immediately became involved in helping out on the Club functions and attending many of the events. He ran for the Board of Director's and eventually became the Club President. For the first time in the Club's 90-year history, the gym was named after Gino. It was an honor and pleasure to know him. Rest in Peace, my friend.

The first major league game I ever saw was in Kansas City. The athletics played the Yankees.... it was 1963. KC won 7-2 and featured a home run by Gino Cimoli. Thanks for a great memory

To the Cimoli family: Twenty-five years ago, the doorbell rang and there was a handsome, happy UPS man with a package (gift) for our newborn daughter. Many times, Gino delighted us by delivering these gifts for her. We enjoyed talking with him about his baseball days. What a swell guy. We extend our sympathy.
