Gregory Mendiola died surrounded by family on June 22, 2024 in San Francisco. He was born in Kahuku, Hawaii on August 2,1945 to Patricia (Caneda) and Isayas. Gregory is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen, and children: Alison, Melissa and Josh, and two grandchildren, Gabriel and Lucas. He is predeceased by his parents, sisters Monica Gayle Jahn and Deborah Lynn Cameros and brothers Richard and Michael Cabanilla.
After graduating from Kahuku High School in 1963, Gregory enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Ft. Meade and Bad Krueznach, Germany. He graduated with a BA in Criminology from UC Berkeley in 1971 and in 1975 received his MA in Public Administration from Golden Gate University. He worked at the San Francisco's Youth Guidance Center as a Juvenile Probation Officer and retired in 2009.
Gregory loved to run and participated in seven marathons and over 25 Bay-to-Breakers. After surviving a ruptured aortic aneurysm, Gregory took up Tai Chi and walking. His daily texts of his walks and selfies will be missed.
Gregory was passionate about his sports teams, Kahuku Red Raiders, Cal Bears, the San Francisco Giants, 49ers and Golden State Warriors. He always had his gear ready representing his teams.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in San Francisco, CA.
