Gregory Wettersten Obituary
Gregory Allan Wettersten
05/16/1957 - 09/04/2025
Gregory Allan Wettersten, a loyal husband, devoted family man, and gregarious friend, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in San Francisco on the morning of September 4th, 2025. He was 68 years old.
Born during a snow storm on May 16, 1957 in Denver, Colorado to Donald Walter Wettersten and Mary Anna (Marie) Olmschenk Wettersten, Greg and his family moved several times during his youth and ultimately landed in Southern California - much to everyone's delight.
Greg completed a dual major in Economics and beach volleyball at the University of California at Irvine and earned his MBA at Cornell University's Johnson School of Management. Upon graduation from Cornell in 1982 he jumped at the chance to return to California and work as an analyst at BA Investment Management. On his first day of work in San Francisco, Greg met the love of his life, Darcy McDonald Blake.
Greg proved himself quickly as a critical thinker and contrarian investor.
At age 30 Greg left the security of his job to found an investment management partnership. Greg loved analysis and arbitrage, and he valued the notion of running his own numbers and making his own luck.
Greg and Darcy welcomed three sons during the 1990's. For anyone who knew Greg, it goes without saying that Henry, Will and Tom were his greatest source of pride and joy.
One of Greg's early and urgent life goals was to join as many clubs as possible, and upon that goal he executed flawlessly. Greg joined The Guardsmen in his early 30's and remained a devoted member for over 35 years. There he found friendships upon which he and Darcy built their adult lives. Greg honed his love for comedic performance through his witty and thought-proking Carnac routines and Top 10 lists. Greg was proud to be an early advocate for The Guardsmen Scholarship Program, believing the organization could provide additional forms of impactful support to under-resourced children in the community. He served as Tree Czar in 1994 and was honored to serve as Guardsmen President in 1997.
Greg left his footprints in other corners of town as a member of Lake Merced Golf Club, the Olympic Club, the Pacific-Union Club and the Bohemian Club, where he cherished his membership in Pow Wow Camp. Greg was deeply involved in The Bay School of San Francisco during its early years. Greg was also a proud member of the St. Francis Yacht Club, where he served in various leadership roles and was honored to be elected as Chairman of the Board in 2022.
Frequently a friendly face in the Grill Room Bar at the St. Francis, Greg was always willing to listen. He was equally reliable for his advice and his confidence in any matter. Nowhere was he more comfortable than in the center of a conversation, gin and tonic in hand. His favorite movie was Caddyshack. He always stayed until the party wound up - the last hour was his favorite. He read voraciously. He was a superb cook. He disliked mint. He was a loyal friend, an inveterate prankster, and a loving family man. He will be dearly missed.
