Hanley Fong Obituary
July 9, 1931 - November 16, 2023
Hanley Fong was born on July 9, 1931, the fifth son of Joe Ying Fong and Loo Poy Fong. He passed away as he wished, still living independently in his own home, on November 16, 2023. Hanley was a native San Franciscan and lived most of his life in the city he loved.
Hanley attended U.C. Berkeley and received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1954. He worked for CalTrans before serving in the Army during the Korean War. After serving, he returned to CalTrans where he worked until his retirement. During his long history with CalTrans, Hanley was proud to work on many of the highways and roads that we drive on today.
A key part of his life was his involvement in the Chinatown YMCA, particularly the Alpha Ram Omega (ARO) Club. The Chinatown YMCA was his second family and he enjoyed volunteering on the Board, chairing committees and assisting with many fundraising activities. Hanley was a proud member of the Mustangs as a youth at the Y and joined the ARO's Service Club in 1953. Hanley joined the Chinatown Y Board in 1970 and has served ever since as the longest standing board member. He played a critical role for over 20 years on the capital building and fundraising committee, making sure the Chinatown Y was rebuilt in 2010. He was honored as Board Member Emeritus in 2014 and continued to serve as representative of the ARO's. Hanley was especially dedicated to supporting Chinatown families and youth. He was also a member and officer of the Hung On Tong Benevolent Association.
Hanley was preceded in death by brothers, Theodore, Frank, Ferris, and Raymond. He is survived by his younger brother, Filbert, his sisters-in-law, Edna and Mildred, eleven nephews and nieces and their families.
Visitation and viewing will occur tomorrow, Thurs., Dec. 7th from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at The Evergreen Mortuary of McAvoy O'Hara, Geary Blvd. at 10th Ave., San Francisco. Burial services will take place on Fri., Dec. 8th at 10:45 am at Skylawn Memorial Park, Highway 92 and Skyline Blvd., San Mateo. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat., Dec. 30th at 1:30 pm at the Chinatown YMCA, 855 Sacramento St., San Francisco.

I was so sorry to hear about Uncle 'Duck' Hanley's passing. We didn't correspond often, certainly not as much as Godfather Ray and l, but it was always nice hearing from him and catching up.
He is thought about often from the family in Rhode Island.

I have so many fond memories of Uncle Hanley. He would come to visit me in my office with a newspaper article or an idea. He was a quiet servant-leader, but he was always full of innovative and creative ideas to build support for the Chinatown Y. I miss our check-ins.
